Christmas Ship to light up Shilshole Saturday

The Argosy Cruise Christmas Ship will parade in the waters off Ballard on Saturday as part of its annual festivities.

The first sailing runs from 2:30 to 5 p.m., and the on-board choir will perform at the Ballard Locks at 3:40 p.m. and Golden Gardens at 4:20 p.m. Here’s the route map.

The second sailing will run from 7 to 9:15 p.m. — this is the most popular event with holiday lights in full display — with choir performances at Carkeek Park at 7:30 p.m. and Shilshole Bay at 8:40 p.m. Here’s the route map.

The lead boat is sold out for both sailings, but as of this writing, there’s still room on the follow boat for the first sailing. Ray’s Boathouse is also taking reservations for dinner.

Argosy Cruises donates part of the Christmas Ship proceeds to The Seattle Times Fund for the Needy, an annual program that raises money for several local charitable organizations.

The Christmas Ship event has been a Northwest tradition since 1949.

The Spirit of Seattle will be decorated with lights and depart from Shilshole at 7 p.m. On board will be the Northwest Girlchoir Amore singers, who will serenade two groups of shoreline spectators.

The parade of boats, now in its 61st year, will head to the Ballard Locks for some musical entertainment from 8:10-8:30 p.m. then go by Golden Gardens Park for another 20 minutes starting at 9:05 p.m. where there will be a bonfire on shore.

While the Christmas Ship itself is sold out, the follow boat, the KWJZ Jazz boat and the dinner boat, which is not part of the parade, all still have availability.

Christmas Ship in Ballard

Argosy’s lead Christmas Ship will be making the rounds in Ballard tonight (Tuesday) with the Vivace! Cathedrals Choir. It departs Shilshole Marina at 7 p.m., entertains the Ballard Locks from 8-8:20 p.m., cruises Golden Gardens from 9:05-9:25 p.m. and returns to the marina at 9:30 p.m.

If you’re not familiar with the Christmas Ship tradition — now in its 59th year — you can sit down and enjoy the music from shore as its broadcast over Argosy’s speaker system. By the way, the forecast tonight is for scattered showers and lows in the mid-40s. (Photo from earlier this month by Susan Ware.)
