This morning during King5’s live coverage of their Hometeam Harvest food drive event, Jean Enersen joined in with the Ballard Eagles Drill Team.

The food drive, which benefits Northwest Harvest, goes until 3 p.m. on Saturday at many locations throughout the Puget Sound area, including the northeast corner of the Northgate Mall parking lot.

You can also text “hometeam” to 89544 to donate $10 to Northwest Harvest.

Star of the Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch Captain Sig Hansen will be on King-TV’s new show New Day Northwest later this week. Hansen recently released his memoir “North by Northwestern: A Seafaring Family on Deadly Alaskan Waters.” Suzie at King-TV emailed us to let us know Hansen will be on the new show this coming Thursday. “We are looking to pack the audience with Sig fans!” she writes. Tickets are free, just email newdaytickets@king5.com. Audience members need to show up at 9:15, taping starts at 10:15 and will finish up around 11:30. If you can’t make it to be part of the audience, the show airs on King-TV, channel 5, from 11 a.m. to noon.

Local businesses are Best of Western Washington

Congratulations to Ballard’s small businesses who have been voted “Best of Western Washington” by viewers of King5’s Evening Magazine.

Suite 300 Skin Care (5424 Ballard Ave NW) won for Best Facial, Plaka Estiatorio (5407 20th Ave NW) won for Best Mediterranean and Space Oddity Vintage Furniture won for Best Antiques. Dick’s Drive-In, a local chain with a restaurant at 9208 Holman Road NW, won for Best Burger and Best Greasy Spoon. You can see the categories and winners here. As back2ballard points out in comments, “There were also many Ballard businesses that ranked in the Top 5! I think is just goes to show that Ballard has a lot of great things going on.”

Mayoral candidates address the ‘Missing Link’

Updated: We recently asked My Ballard readers what questions you’d ask the mayoral candidates for the KING 5 and Seattle Times debate. We recorded three questions on camera, and tonight they aired one of them: “There have been a number of bicycle accidents along the unfinished portion of the Burke-Gilman trail, commonly referred to as the ‘Missing Link.’ How do you propose to address safety along this stretch?” (Thank you Elaine for the question!)

As many Ballard residents know, the city approved plans to bridge the “Missing Link” of the trail, but a coalition of Ballard businesses filed a lawsuit in July over concerns of the project’s impact on traffic safety, parking and the environment. In the debate, Joe Mallahan said he supports improving bicycle safety, but he declined to take a position because of the ongoing lawsuit. “To take a position would be bad policy,” he said, explaining he wished there was a place “up in the neighborhood to get around that stretch.”

Mike McGinn said he supports the plan to bridge the link, criticizing Mallahan for not backing the city. “I think we need to complete the trail as planned, as approved, as funded,” he said. “It’s just one of the real treasures of our city. It’s very unsafe as it currently stands.” Watch the video here.

King5 at Ballard High School on Friday

King5 reporter Tim Robinson will be at Ballard High School Friday morning for his weekly Pep Rally. He will be in the main gym broadcasting live for the King 5 morning news (which airs on KONG 6/16)! The ASB sent out a note asking Ballard High school students to show up decked out in their beaver colors for 2 live segments. The first will be at 7:45 a.m. the second at 8:30 (which will mean missing part of first period. Show up and show your school spirit! As the note says, “YES, YOU WILL BE ON TV! SET YOUR DVR!”
