Woodland Mod, a new Scandinavian-inspired homewares and art store, is getting ready to open on Ballard Ave.
Owner Jaimie McCausland is making final touches to open up at 5330 Ballard Ave in the former Camelion Design location. Camelion closed back in December after 24 years of operating in Ballard. McCausland took over the space earlier this year and has been renovating the retail shop to better reflect a Scandinavian minimalist aesthetic.
McCausland told the Ballard Alliance that opening her own shop has always been a dream of hers.
“While this has been a long-time dream of mine, my parents are ultimately who inspired me,” she said. “Both were lifelong entrepreneurs, so I guess it is just in my blood!” McCausland’s partner has his own architecture business—she says being surrounded by small business owners helped plant the seed for her own venture.
McCausland’s background is in sales and marketing, “with a lifelong passion for midcentury/Scandinavian interiors and product design,” she said. Her partner joined forces with her to reimagine the space and renovate it for Woodland Mod.
“While corporate life had its perks, I always felt in my gut that nothing could possibly compare to putting your heart and soul into something that you’re passionate about and sharing that in a way that brings people joy.”
McCausland is a Ballard resident; she moved to the neighborhood seven years ago. She said long before she lived here, she would come to Ballard “to shop, eat, visit the museum, Farmer’s Market, Seafoodfest, Golden Gardens, Stone Gardens, taking visitors to the Locks—there [was] always something awesome to do. When we were walking down Ballard Avenue in February and saw this space for lease, we just knew it was meant to be,” McCausland told the Alliance.
Woodland Mod will sell Scandinavian-inspired homewares, wall art, accessories, and wellness products both locally made and abroad.
Along with Scandinavian-inspired goods, McCausland said she wants her customers to feel the concept of “hygge”, a Danish word that refers to a quality of coziness and comfort that evokes contentment and well-being.
“I hope that someone walks away with a new appreciation for minimalist and modern, Nordic influenced design. Nordic design masterfully combines calm, crisp clean lines that aren’t cold. Consisting typically of neutral palate, it creates a perfect backdrop for a pop of color or the opportunity to connect with nature using plants,” McCausland said. “At Woodland Mod, we have curated a collection of items that capture that essence.”
Woodland Mod will be opening this weekend; their hours will be 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for more details.
