SUMMARY:Clay and Fire Workshop
DESCRIPTION:During this 4-hour beginner-friendly workshop\, guests will be guided through foundational hand-building techniques\, including pinch and coil methods\, to create two unique ceramic pieces. No prior experience is necessary—this workshop is designed for beginners and anyone seeking a slower\, more intentional approach to making. \nThe session unfolds at a relaxed pace\, with a brief introduction to the craft\, then allowing time for participants to settle into the tactile process of working with clay. Midway through the workshop\, we’ll pause for a tea and snack break—an opportunity to connect and enjoy the atmosphere before returning to the clay. \nThis workshop is both a creative practice and a small ceremony of making: a moment to reconnect with the earth through natural materials\, with yourself through slowing down during intentional focus on a craft\, and with others through shared creativity. \nAll finished works will be pit-fired off-site using a traditional firing process that allows flame\, smoke\, and minerals to leave organic\, one-of-a-kind markings on the clay. The firing will take place on Saturday\, June 13th\, late afternoon through evening. The actual firing process is a few hours\, then cools down slowly overnight. \nAll participants are welcome to join for a hands-on experience and an early evening BBQ in Lynnwood. (Details for exact time and address will be disclosed via email to all participants closer to the workshop date.) If you are unable to attend the firing\, we will make sure your pieces are well cared for. All work will be ready for pickup at Shop Atria at a later date. \nCome as you are with a curious mind and open to play.\nLeave with 1-2 pieces of art\, a renewed sense of presence\, and a skill that you can practice anywhere. \nLocation:\nShop Atria\,\n2607 NW Market St\nSeattle\, WA 98107 \nStreet parking is available in the surrounding area within walking distance of the shop.

SUMMARY:Movie Screening: The Big Payback
DESCRIPTION:For the first time in American history\, a tax-funded reparations bill for Black residents is passed in Evanston\, Illinois. Funded through a cannabis tax\, the program aims to address generations of systemic housing discrimination — but the film makes clear that reparations are far from a simple or universally agreed-upon issue. \nThe documentary follows rookie alderman Robin Rue Simmons as she navigates fierce debate from supporters and critics alike\, including disagreement within the Black community itself over what “true” reparations should look like. Meanwhile in Washington\, D.C.\, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee continues the decades-long push for HR 40\, a national bill to study reparations for slavery in America.\nRather than presenting easy answers\, the film explores the legal\, political\, moral\, and personal complexities surrounding reparations as communities across the country wrestle with how — or whether — historical wrongs can be addressed today. \nA post-discussion to follow the film. \nWhile the event is free\, a suggested $5 donation to support the screening is appreciated.\nMeaningful Movies Project Hosts: Sustainable Ballard and the Center for Spiritual Living Ballard.

SUMMARY:Drypoint Intaglio Printmaking Using Tetra Pak
DESCRIPTION:Even beginners can learn to create “etching-like” prints quickly and easily using tools and materials you already have at home! Explore drypoint intaglio printmaking using recycled Tetra Pak cartons as an affordable and eco-friendly plate material. We’ll practice cross-hatching and incising textures using drypoint tools\, corkscrews\, dental tools\, and exacto knives. Instead of etching ink\, we’ll use water soluble “Stabilo Woody” colored pencils. After “inking\,” prepare your plate using Q-tips to increase contrast\, and pull prints using rolling pins or hand-burnishing. Emphasis on sustainable practice\, mark-making\, and experimental approaches to tone\, pattern\, and layering. \nAll supplies are provided\, and step-by-step guidance will ensure everyone leaves with three finished plates in this two hour class. We’ll have enough 300gsm 100% cotton paper for each student to make two prints from each plate in class\, and you’ll leave knowing how to make more prints at home. Images for tracing will be provided\, but feel free to bring your own! Plates will be 2×3 inches and 4×5 inches. Print your images in reverse\, especially words\, as our prints will be the reverse from what we scratch into the plate.
