SUMMARY:Blessing of the Fleet
DESCRIPTION:The 98th annual Blessing of the Fleet. For all of the fisher folk who risk their lives allowing us to enjoy the bounty of the sea. \nOriginated by the late Pastor O.L. Haavik of Ballard First Lutheran Church 98 years ago\, the service will be conducted by Pastor Elise Scott of Ballard First Lutheran Church. We will offer thanks to God for the fishing community\, remembering the risks they take each day to provide food for our tables\, we will pray that their families will be healthy and protected during their time of separation\, and we will remember those who went out to sea and never returned. \nAs in past years\, various representatives from the government and the fishing industry have been invited to bring greetings. \nThe spring departure of the commercial fishing fleet for the unpredictable and sometimes dangerous Pacific and Alaska waters has been regularly observed since Pastor Haavik started the tradition. \nThe public is invited to attend this celebration! Join in asking God’s blessing for a bountiful season\, peace upon the unpredictable sea\, and a safe journey home. Coffee and cookies will be served following the service.

SUMMARY:Kalevala Festival: Kantele Performance
DESCRIPTION:What is a Kantele? \nThe kantele\, Finland’s national instrument\, is a powerful symbol of Finnish cultural heritage and is closely connected to the national epic\, the Kalevala. \nIn the Kalevala\, the wise hero Väinämöinen creates the first kantele from the jawbone of a giant pike\, stringing it with the hair of a stallion. After losing that instrument\, he fashions a second kantele from birch wood. According to Kalevala\, the music of the kantele holds magical power. When Väinämöinen plays\, the entire natural world grows still to listen—people\, animals\, forests\, and even the waters. \nThe kantele later became an important national symbol during Finland’s 19th-century cultural awakening\, when the Kalevala helped strengthen Finnish identity under Russian rule and prepared the nation for independence in 1917. Today the instrument remains central to Finnish folk music\, ranging from traditional five-string kanteles to modern forty-string concert instruments.

SUMMARY:Plus Size Clothing Swap
DESCRIPTION:Come swap your unwanted clothing\, meet some neighbors\, and keep more things out of the landfill at Sustainable Ballard’s Plus size clothing swap! We will be in lower Sunset Hall April 19th from 2-4pm. \nOpen House Style Swap\nbody neutral space\nFree to attend\nBring 5 items max\nLeftover clothes will go to local community efforts \nClothing Requirements:\nSize 16+ 40+ /XL+\nAny gender clothing\nTops\, bottoms\, outwear\, and dresses accepted\nNo shoes or accessories\nGood condition\, no tears or stains \nThis is not a clothing donation site. Please bring your best items to swap with those of a similar size. \nWe need volunteers to help run the event and redistribute clothing at the end. Interested? Contact clare@sustainableballard.org \nFAQ:\nWhat is an Open House style swap?\nThere is no setup period\, and the swapping happens for the full 2 hours. Just come in whenever you are available\, drop off your items\, hangout\, and shop around. \nWhy am I limited to bringing 5 items?\nAll leftover clothing has to be redistributed to another program. Since this is a new event\, we are keeping the number small until we know our full capacity. \nIt also helps drive the intention of the swap: this is not about bringing unwanted piles of clothing\, it’s about sharing the select items with your local community. \nWhat does it mean to be a body neutral space?\nBody neutrality is about adopting a non-judgment and accepting approach to one’s body. De-emphasizing the importance of appearance\, and viewing the body as simply the tool that carries you through life. In this space\, it means refraining from comments that are a value judgement of your or other people’s body. You as you exist currently are enough.

SUMMARY:Free Virtual Movie Screening of The Librarians
DESCRIPTION:Meaningful Movies Ballard presents a virtual screening of The Librarians with a post-discussion to follow featuring Brenna Shanks\, Teen Materials Selector for the King County Library System. \n“The Librarians” takes viewers from Texas to Florida and beyond\, where local libraries have become unexpected battlegrounds in a national struggle over parental control\, intellectual freedom\, and democracy itself. Sparked by the controversial “Krause List” in Texas\, which targets 850 books centered on race and LGBTQIA+ stories\, the film takes a deep investigative dive into the escalating movement against book banning.\nThe film captures the courage and resilience of the everyday heroes\, librarians\, as well as concerned parents and students flanking them\, who have become first responders in the fight for the freedom to read\, standing defiantly against censorship at all costs. \nThis is a virtual event. Please RSVP at the event website link to be invited to join the movie. \nWhile the event is free\, a suggested $5 donation to support the screening is appreciated.
