    Well, apparently the record is gone. That’s probably good riddance.

    Well Howdy! I wasn’t sure there would be any newish threads – haven’t checked in quite awhile. I was reading about three very sick individuals (one of them the mother) who shot up a 10 year old with meth, raped her, strangled her, dismembered her, and then set her corpse on fire in the bathtub. Perhaps you’ve heard about it. There’s a lot of us down here in Albuquerque who aren’t quite sure what to make of this, including me. So like any ‘normal’ person I wander on down to the bottom of the page and take a look at a few of the comments. They don’t help much. But before you know it, I’m logging in to Disquis which I haven’t done in many months and the next thought that pops into my head is “I wonder if anything is brewing over on MyBallard these days. I’m struck by my own curious desire to go ‘chat’ with people on a forum. They have ND down here of course but I never find anyone arguing. They don’t really have a forum per se, just standard posts and most of those are about garage sales and futons for sale.

    Well, anyway, I kind of miss it – MyBallard, the forum, all of it frankly, even the battles I had with several of you. There is a value in putting thought into written words. It is a discovery of self and other and creates involvement in the community. Perhaps some of that exists on FB, but people tend to rely on memes to much now for that to be worthwhile. I think there was a time and place in history that seems to have passed. We had a good thing going there for a while. It was fun.

    BTW, if I said the exact same thing on the last revival thread, I’m sorry.

    Greetings and well wishes from the desert.

    PS – FWIW I pegged Compass Rose from the day she first reared her Nimby head, it’s in the record :-)

    Hi All!

    I check in every so often. Far too busy to do otherwise. My wife and daughter have been back to visit several times. Our sorry little ole house on 63rd has become 4 shoe boxes. Meanwhile I’m lost in the wastelands of SE New Mexico. Sometime in July I get a couple days in the Seattle. I suppose I’ll make a visit to Olaf’s. If the forum still exists, I’ll send a call out.

    Hey look at that! It works again. Hi everybody! I used to let my pup loose there. Usually in the winter there aren’t many people about after 5 or 6 and there aren’t any sporting activities either. The running joke was that it was a “winter dog park”. Do you think that might have something to do with it?

    From Ulysses, the last stanza of which was featured in the Dead Poet’s Society…

    There lies the port; the vessel puffs her sail;
    There gloom the dark, broad seas. My mariners,
    Souls that have toiled, and wrought, and thought with me—
    That ever with a frolic welcome took
    The thunder and the sunshine, and opposed
    Free hearts, free foreheads—you and I are old;
    Old age hath yet his honor and his toil.
    Death closes all; but something ere the end,
    Some work of noble note, may yet be done,
    Not unbecoming men that strove with gods.
    The lights begin to twinkle from the rocks;
    The long day wanes; the slow moon climbs; the deep
    Moans round with many voices. Come, my friends.
    ‘Tis not too late to seek a newer world.
    Push off, and sitting well in order smite
    the sounding furrows; for my purpose holds
    To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths
    Of all the western stars, until I die.
    It may be that the gulfs will wash us down;
    It may be that we shall touch the Happy Isles,
    And see the great Achilles, whom we knew.
    Though much is taken, much abides; and though
    We are not now that strength which in old days
    Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are—
    One equal temper of heroic hearts,
    Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
    To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

    But Mike caved. He said he would oppose it and then caved.

    Anyway, for those of you who missed it, the future of the tunnel project was pretty clearly spelled out not only in this article from the Stranger, but in history.

    Whether or not you car for the Stranger, they have the ultimate right to say “I told you so”.

    Remember that water front “promenade” I mentioned back in 09 in a thread about the bike path, the train, the old Ballard industries, the Fred Meyer, etc. etc. etc. Here is another prediction – Fisherman’s Terminal will no longer be Fisherman’s Terminal within 10 years, or it will be in name only because it will be full of sail boats and maybe a few sport fishing tourist boats. As one industry leaves, I suppose another will have to replace it. This is good news for Bellingham and Port Townsend. I’m guessing that the last of the stringent hold outs at Salmon Bay Sand and Gravel will see the writing on the wall too. Is it too soon to by roller blades?

    Nobody rages on like Driscoll does unless he harbors secret desires. For now, the primary victims of his domination fantasies are his wife and of course the members of his church. But the time isn’t far off when the primary victim(s) will be the young sons of his parishioners.

    Past… “Hopscotch” by Julio Cortazar.

    Current… “A Dance With Dragons” by George Martin. Book 5 of the series (we’re talking nearly 5000 page here people, sheesh).

    On the shelf waiting… “Hell Bent” by Benjamin Lorr. It’s about Bikram.

    Saguaro cactus – they are pretty cool aren’t they? I was in Phoenix last Thanksgiving. A few of my cousins and one of my Aunts have settled in the Phoenix area and we had a family reunion.

    Spring comes pretty early down in Artesia. The fields of alfalfa and hay are already greening up. The pecan orchards are beginning to bud. But next comes the incessant wind and hay fever.

    Spring is mixed bag in the southwest. Much like the northwest I guess. Still I’m glad I don’t have to be looking towards July 4th for a nice hot day!

    Yep links and picture url’s aren’t working yet. I believe they are waiting to see how well the spam blockers work. Too bad. I have really cool picture of an eagle I just tried to post on VB’s thread.

    Hi All,

    Everything seems to work just fine so far but I admit I haven’t tried much. Hopefully this thread will have some staying power so we don’t have to kick all the tires tonight.
