Possibly unrelated but ever since CL did a bunch of work on my street, stringing new cable I assume, I’ve been getting some “video snow” interference on my OTA television reception. It’s not bad but enough that I noticed and have tried turning off the computers and other electric appliances but they don’t seem to be the cause. Wondering if anyone else has noticed this or maybe I’m the last person in Ballard still using a tv antenna and not a cable subscriber ;-)
Interesting, I had a very small package (envelope) go missing today. FedEx claims to have delivered it during a time that I was home actually but I didn’t hear their truck, there was no knock at the door and voila, no package. I don’t think it was stolen but ya never know. Waiting to hear back from FedEx as I think they delivered it to the wrong house. Or if it was stolen I hope the perp gets sick from my cat’s medication.
Try this site: http://www.antennaweb.org/Address.aspx
It’ll show you where the signals for the different stations are coming from, and the best height & direction for your antenna.
I have a flat antenna that I got at Costco that has worked just fine. Prior to the flat one, I bought some fancy thing that supposedly amplified the signal that I had to assemble that turned out to be junk, ugly, and took up too much space. (And it worked better when I removed the amplification hardware, go figure.) The new flat one is good for me, I have it laying on top of a bookcase. I haven’t really had to adjust it or anything. You can hang them on the wall. You may have to get an outdoor one or one that you can put up in your attic if you need more height to capture the signals.
Apparently someone drove a car into the convenience store on the corner of 80th and 24th. The KING-5 twitter feed says there was just one person with minor injuries. (Strangely, I did not hear a thing, not even any sirens. Wasn’t until the two choppers showed up that I decided to check the 911 log and see what was happening.)
Yay, so glad to hear your handsome kitty has come home! Maybe just wipe him down with some damp paper towels and then dry him off with one of your own already used bath or hand towels or a t-shirt, that way he’ll smell more familiar to your other kitty and not like anything unusual. I would not put any substances on him, that could actually be harmful. Good luck, I’m sure they’ll be fine with each other very soon. Cheers!
When mine was originally setup, unbeknownst to me they grounded the cable to….my gas line!!! It was just by coincidence that the repair guys from CenturyLink were at the house the next day and alerted me to the problem and potential hazard (lightning strike > fire > exploding house). It was fixed within 24 hours which was a good thing because there was was a big lightning storm the very next day. (Speeds are still good with my setup.)
Curtis – I agree, it’s a lot of detailed stuff to know and figure out. I worked in the software industry for 25 years and this network stuff is still beyond my scope. I did a lot of online research before signing up with Comcast 2 years ago and a lot of research on the cable modems, buying versus renting theirs. Decided to buy my own plus a wireless router. To their credit, Comcast has been good about fixing things although the initial install was done completely wrong and then they charged me for coming out to fix their bad work and I had to pay it even though I was not supposed to be billed otherwise my account kept saying I was overdue and it took several months for the refund/credit to come back. So that was annoying but they completely rewired everything inside and out. So far I’ve had good luck doing the online tech chat that you can get to in the Customer Service section after you log in to their site. I have internet only, haven’t even looked much at online movies or programming but am thinking of getting a ROKU or AppleTV box.
About 90 minutes after I chatted with the tech it looked like they remotely rebooted my modem so that whatever changes they did would take effect. I just checked Speed Test a few minutes ago and it’s mighty speedy now, even faster than before the slowdown happened and a bit higher than the advertised Mbps for the level I pay for. Totally surprised they fixed it actually. So all is well for now. Thanks for all the great info, suggestions, and advice, that InSIDDer4 program looks cool. I will definitely save what you guys posted for future use. I’m still not sure what they changed, I’m guessing they remotely changed the channel I was on (?). Anyhow, all’s good again, yay! Thanks!
OK, well I figured it was not the modem after checking online to see if it was still a current model which it is. So, I just spent the last 30 minutes or so with Comcast online chat while their tech checked my modem signals remotely and then sent something or other to it in order to fix the problem. He said it will take another 30-60 minutes before everything is synchronized and the speed is back up. I have no idea why it would have plummeted though, that’s what I find kinda weird. He said that my signal was very unstable, in the red.
Richy – Thanks for the extra info. I’m not even sure how to log onto the modem though. It’s probably in the control panel settings, I’m on a Mac. If the Comcast fix doesn’t work I’ll try following your advice and see how things are setup. I seem to have some vague memory of changing that stuff eons ago when I had dial-up service on another computer. Thanks!
Hmmm, a new modem? I own the one I am using, it’s a Motorola Surfboard SB6121 that I got less than 2 years ago. I guess I’ll attempt to talk to Comcast technical support or just go to Best Buy and ask them there. If I have to buy a new modem I’m guessing that Comcast will have to come out to set that up and charge me for a house call….grrr…
Thanks for the tip about new modems, I had no idea I would need to get another one.
*bump* – Still missing.
Yeah, what was up with that chopper this morning over Loyal Heights? I checked the Real-Time-911 log and didn’t see anything. Weird. Probably a nice view of the mountains from up from there though.
You should check with Seattle Animal Shelter tomorrow (Sunday) to see if anyone brought her in the week she went missing. Or if animal control found her. They have a lot of suggestions for finding a missing pet too. Did she have a microchip and was she wearing a collar? Did she ever cross 80th to the North side because there’s a green house on 80th and 30th that sometimes has a lot of cats hanging out in the yards. I think I counted 9 there one day. You should leave flyers with everyone on the block and ask them to check their garages, basements and sheds. I’ll look for her when I’m out walking. Hoping she is located soon.
The electronic traps supposedly kill more quickly and humanely. Victor makes a multiple mouse electronic trap but it’s around $89. Years ago I was living in an old house where rats got in. A guy from the health department came out (back in the olden days when they did that), told us exactly where to put the trap, what to use as bait and the time at which the rat would come out. He was right within about 20 minutes but the snap trap did not immediately kill the rat and my housemate unfortunately had to finish the task. I figure if a mouse or rat is meant to live it’ll do ok out in nature and if not then it’ll help another creature to live.
Yay! Thank goodness she came back before all the noisy fireworks tonight! (Beautiful kitty!)
Have a great 4th!
Are you sure it’s mice and not rats? I did a little Google searching and found several very inexpensive no-kill mouse traps that will catch multiple mice (up to 30) in one trap, and then you can set them free for the owls to eat. (Just make sure you release them far away and block up their entrances to your house.) I’ve posted some links below for some of these traps and a home-made one that’s amusing. There are also reusable electronic kill traps but they are very expensive. Whatever you decide, don’t use poison! That’s the worst thing because you will then have a toxic substance in your house, the rodents will often die inside the walls/ceilings which is very smelly and then you’ll have to tear out the walls, etc. And, if a cat or dog happens to have contact with a poisoned rodent, they may also get sick or die. If it’s mice, I’d try one of these no-kill multi-mouse traps. Use a bait they like. Apparently they love freshly baked goods, bread, muffins, peanut butter, raisins. I’d try some bread or something not too messy, maybe some teeny tiny sandwiches with peanut butter and raisins inside. ;-) Here’s some links:
Yay! So glad your kitty made it back home and is safe now! I looked for her last night when I was out walking but I only saw a few very large tabbies around Earl and in the alleyway.
She is a beautiful Bengal! That’s funny about the stroller. I have an all gray cat that is half Siamese that used to like riding around on a small woven cotton rug that I would drag up and down the hallway and in circles on the kitchen floor. He’s an old guy now with various health problems but he did enjoy the carpet ride about 6 months ago. Glad your kitty is home!
Saw the chopper flying around too. My guess, and this is pure speculation, is that it might just be a crowd of teens doing what they do on the last day of the school year. There was a large group of them at the Sunset View park earlier this evening and 3 or 4 police cars showed up and they all dispersed. Not sure what happened, but I did see a few beer cans in the street and the cops stayed around until it got dark and windy out.
There’s also the “JRA Bicycle Shop” at 8318 8th Ave. NW. (Corner of 84th) They often have a discount coupon in that monthly deals envelope that is mailed out. They saved me a bunch of money by just fixing the things that weren’t working rather than doing a full tune-up which is what I thought my bike needed when I walked in. They have received very good reviews.
Check them out: http://www.jrabikeshop.com/
(Note, they are closed on Mondays.)
It would be nice to have the Login link from the forum threads like there was on the old forum. Now you have to back all the way out to log in and then drill back in to the forum thread you want to comment on.
Oy, yeah I saw all that graffiti on the car wash today. I thought it had closed down or something. I also noticed some by probably the same tagger on the construction plywood outside Laresen’s Bakery.
