I’m with VB on this one. I know this evidence is only anectodal, ie I overheard a conversation between three homeless gentlemen on the 28, but yes, they were all from out of state (Florida, Illinois, Arizona). They were laughing about Seattle being so great because they could smoke crack on the streets and not get arrested, or their head’s kicked in by cops like they did back home, so yeah, I think a few people do move here for the liberal policies/services.
Check out this article about downtown street crime and how the current drug policies are related:
I am by no means saying that all homeless people fall into this category, not at all, but the category does exist and it would be interesting to quantify.
Or just house the homeless (Veterans, at least), like New Orleans has been:
I guess I’ll start carrying pepper spray with me when I walk my dog because if anyone under any circumstances sprays my dog, the favor will be returned.
Be safe Ballard!
Oh GI, please tell me you are kidding…too tired to decide if I’m being gullible. Please tell me I’m being ridiculous…every night until the next 4th?
I was one of the folks who heard the *noise* a few months back. In that case, it was specific to a huge ship docked by Fred Meyer full of frozen goodness from Alaska. There was some talk about generator troubles on the ship so they were using an external generator, but someone else could prolly speak to those specific better than I. All know is I saw/heard the ship and when the noise was gone, so was the ship.
I have since then noticed more night time noise coming from that general direction. I thing that it’s prolly the train yard down in Interbay. I’m no expert, but with increased development down there coupled with the removal of more of our tree canopy, we are getting more sound bouncing around and carrying ever further.
Check this out for historical perspective:
Best learn to block it out, especially if we get increased train traffic with this coal business. I am attempting to block it out myself, with mixed results, so I feel ya.
This vote makes me grumpy and stabby and I just wanna vote no on everything that raises taxes from now on. Unless it’s state income tax, and then I’m in!
Just so you know Gracie, information that someone gives you rather than information gathered from personal observation makes it second hand information. Hardly reliable.
But really, sorry to see this tunnel mess. I want that viaduct gone sooner rather than later, seems like a disaster waiting to happen.04/11/2014 at 9:32 am in reply to: Uff da! 500,000 square feet of office space planned for Ballard #64125
As an end user of technology that these “techies” create, I can think of lots of ways my urban lifestyle has been enhanced by their work.
But I like the maritime industry too, so let’s hope for peaceful equilibrium.

I would say the rude person in the above scenario is the one who called the patron rude for sitting down “too early” *gasp!*. They were already sitting (and done eating), what is it to them? Yeesh.01/29/2014 at 8:13 pm in reply to: 4 days before the Superbowl, nary a Skittle in sight! #58856
Any one seen the limited edition Seattle skittles yet? Blue and Green! I need some, post any sightings-they were recently announced…
Well Floyd, I would argue that this particular noise is a bit exceptional for the area but I only have 14 years of living here to draw on.
I’m willing to believe that this is a one-off and they will do what they can to avoid the same thing from happening again, but I also believe they need to know what their impact is on their neighbors.
Actually Ronny J, or should I call you Captain Obvious? Obnoxious noise is obnoxious noise and we all are duty bound to be good neighbors, or at least try.
I’m not from the suburbs, and will never live in one. Bring on the urban density! At least then the noises will be more diverse and bend in a bit more:)
Rookie question-who do you report a noise violation to? Police non-emergency? It’s been going since last Thursday…I’m going to call, anyone care to join?
I heard a few times during the night. Sadly I heard it cuz I was tossing and turning due to the weird noise that’s been going all night coming from near Fred Meyer/ship canal?! Another forum member referred to it as a helicopter like noise-to me more of a massive diesel engine/generator?! Anyone heard it or know what that is?
Sorry for the hi-jack, but I’m dying of curiosity (and sleeplessness)
Thanks for posting this, it’s been driving me crazy! I don’t know what it is but I may investigate tonight. It sounds like a massive diesel generator…ship? Short line train? Make it stop!
