Volunteers restore vandalized mural

The mural at Bergen Place Park, which was defaced nearly nine months ago, has been restored.

Photo from July 2009.

While most of the black spray paint was cleaned up immediately after the vandalism occurred, getting the paint off the mural itself was more difficult. Victoria Sangrey Hunter the volunteer coordinator for the Friends of Bergen Place tells us that Andhi Spath and Norm Scrivner volunteered their time and talent to restore the mural before the 17th of May celebration. Spath is the artist who restored the piece and Scrivner is the Art Director of Pacific Studio in Ballard. “Friends of Bergen Place is truly blessed to have such dedicated volunteers and businesses who are passionate about Bergen Place. A huge tusen takk to them all,” Sangrey Hunter says. The mural was created in 1995 with help from the Ballard Historical Society, and it was dedicated by the King and Queen of Norway.

  1. Bravo for this volunteer effort, but why hasn't this mural been coated with that substance that doesn't allow paint to stick to it? Many murals are defaced and why they aren't coated with this teflon like protectant.

  2. Maybe if we had a more hip-hop style mural, one that kids can relate to, then they wouldn't tag it? Maybe something with Swedes break dancing and some Danish rap lyrics?

Just thinking. We need to be compassionate to our youth and listen to them.

  3. It doesn't matter how compassionate, there will always be an element who will vandalize. My street is being tagged by some idiot spraying 'KY' on everything from signs, to private walls and vans.
