Join Northwest Viking Alliance elder William Goetz as he teaches an intermediate class on runic writing during the Viking Age. This class is designed as a follow-up to the Runic Writing Basics Class and will expand upon topics introduced there while adding some new ones. In the first part, participants will look at extant runic inscriptions from the Viking Period along with other periods throughout the development and use of runic writing. These selections will help to illustrate and reinforce concepts learned in the previous session.

The second part will diverge a bit from these concepts and venture into later Medieval to modern material, with the goal of helping to understand the journey from the ancient runic writing systems of Northern Europe to the mystical practices that developed from them. This material confronts some uncomfortable yet necessary truths and gives participants a clear overview of these developments that can be valuable for those with both academic and personal interests in these practices.
