Luxury apartment company buys Sunset Bowl

Posted by Geeky Swedes on January 4th, 2008

We have an update now on the story that Sunset Bowl has sold. After getting a tip from a comment on The Stranger’s blog, I did a tax records search and discovered Sunset Bowl sold for $13.1 million to Avalon Ballard LLC, of which has an address that tracks back to Avalon Bay Communities. (See a .pdf of the warranty deed of the sale here.) A quick Google reveals it “is in the business of developing, redeveloping, acquiring and managing high-quality apartment communities in the high barrier-to-entry markets of the United States.” So, it looks like there’s a good chance Sunset Bowl will be torn down for some new apartments. (Thanks, tomasyalba for the research tip.)

Update: The PI confirms the buyer and says it will close in mid-April.

As I have said before I am all for growth, but it is a shame that there will be nowhere to bowl anywhere near here (I am guessing it isn't reasonable to put a bowling alley in an apartment building). My mom notes that there will be a whole lot of new people in Ballard but nothing left to do, I have always liked the neighborhood because of the people but she makes a good point. My hope is that with all these new potential customers maybe a new bowling alley will be more viable.

Maybe the Denny's building could house a new bowling alley???

It's a shame. Sometimes new development isn't good, as in this case. Some things should not change.

People gotta live somewhere - do we see abandoned neighborhoods or are we just growing. Have more babies!

The things that made Seattle and Ballard unique in the first place are being replaced by lux apts and condos. Try supporting local shops that have a history with Ballard not just the new "life-style" boutiques! It's Ballard not Belltown!
