Buy this Ballard church for $1,975,000

Posted by Geeky Swedes on March 30th, 2008

Calvary Lutheran Church merged with Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church earlier this month, and now Calvary Lutheran’s building on 23rd and 70th is for sale. For just under $2 million, you can own a sanctuary with “amazing stained glass” that seats 279. Calvary Lutheran merged with Our Redeemer’s after years of declining attendance, reports the Ballard News Tribune.

Can it only be used as a church? Are there zoning issues if someone wanted to use the building as a restaurant?
  • Geeky Swedes
Ellen, according to the sales information the land is zoned as residential.

Too bad, a neighborhood resturant there (like the Barking Dog) would print money.
  • Dale
That would be one funky-feeling restaurant. I suppose they could go with a theme: "Yes, I'll have the Hallelujia Hosts appetizer and a chalice of the house wine to start..." I'm probably going to Heck for that one...

How about calling it the Last Supper and featuring great wine and unique bread to go with a traditional (?) Ballard cusine?

Can't zoning be changed? There must be some process for that!
  • Joshua
To continue dreaming...You'd knock it down, build a half-dozen parking spots with a three story building. First floor: Neighborhood grocer (good wine selection), second floor: book store / video rental, third floor: neighborhood pub/resturant (kids welcome < 9pm more of a bar feel after 9pm).

    Ha ha!

I believe you're all talking about God's house. It should remain a place of worship.
  • Jahara
But maybe God would enjoy a good beer and a movie?

"I believe you’re all talking about God’s house"

Really? Bet he didn't have to get a sub-prime then....

"It should remain a place of worship."

Some of us worship fine wine and beer Gods, does that count? Or can only certains Gods can apply?
  • Judy
Well! It is zoned "residential" so maybe we should find out which god resides there - or maybe it applies to whichever god takes up residence.

It looks like the same genre as the old Denney's. Hope it doensn't become a landmark. Maybe a better home for the Goodwill!

I attended that chruch as a kid. Where did the Icelanders go?
  • Joe Henrickson
Anyone willing to invest and revive the ol place of worship??? My grandma was married there and my dad and uncle were both confirmed there. I bet there are a handful of Icelanders that would love to invest. What do you think???
  • Help The Homeless...
Everyone is always so concerned about the increasing homeless population living on the streets of Ballard. Calvary is currently being used as homeless/low income feed 4 days per week. Why not turn the church into transitional housing for the homeless? Include a few case managers trained to work with this population, along with strict rules surrounding behavior and sobriety? Just a thought and I bet God would approve, though I doubt the neighbors would. Too bad. I think this mostly empty building could help put some lives back on track. We certainly don't need more traditional housing in Ballard.
