Good morning, Edith!

Posted by Dale on April 9th, 2008

Here’s what a sunny Wednesday morning looks like at Edith Macefield’s house:

Oh wait, here’s her house:

What rounds out this cheery picture is the ear-piercing yammering of a jackhammer somewhere inside the five-story building being constructed around her house. You’ll remember she turned down $1 million to move.

    Poor Edith.

But I just can't get enough of it. Thanks for the update.

I drove by a few days ago and couldn't see her house either, thought maybe she had finally sold out. Glad to see she hasn't though...thanks for the update.

All so that we can have our Trader Joe's... Poor Edith. Try to imagine this happening to your house, in your neighborhood, to you and your family.

Now try imagining it happening to you in your later life, when you are tired and likely sad as life's twilight descends.

I don't know Edith or her personal situation but I feel a lot of compassion for her.

I would have taken the million and bought something else. It can't be pleasant and she shouldn't be surprised by all of the noise.

Can't say I feel bad for the gal. I'm sure moving would've been tough, but dealing with this everyday is not the way to spend the last years of one's life. She was warned.

I personally can't wait for the Trader Joe's.

And you don't think we need to worry about Mike's Chili Palace - already there is no place to park!

Don't we care about the institutions that have historically made Ballard so unique. Bring on the Trader Joe's et al and the day will come when you can't tell one neighborhood from another. Just like we can't much tell one mall from another once we are inside.

I can't help but comment on this, and it's not about the development swallowing Edith's house. I don't know Edith but just because she is 86 doesn't mean she is sitting around her house withering away in sadness. For heavens sake people, Edith didn't want to sell her house, I say good for her - and just because your 86 doesn't mean your life is over.
  • I seem to recall that that house was not surrounded by a wonderful neighborhood, now being destroyed by developers, but rather an underutilized empty lot and two empty industrial buildings that did nothing for the day to day character or life of ballard.

I like to think our neighborhoods are about more than a collection of buildings anyway - rather they are about the people living there. I'm more broken up about Sunset Bowl than about Edith.

I'm sure that she is very happy with herself for sticking it out. You'd have to be pretty stubborn not to take a deal like that.

"Try to imagine this happening to your house, in your neighborhood, to you and your family."

What, be offered a $1 million dollars for a home that wasn't worth a 1/3rd of that price? Please, try me!

"Now try imagining it happening to you in your later life"

I'd think, wow, my kids and grandkids will be taken care of, thanks. Don't confuse stubborn with dedicated.

"Don’t we care about the institutions that have historically made Ballard so unique."

Unique to who? Vacant lots strewn with broken glass and empty industrial buildings are institutions to old Ballardites? What's next, Denny's is a national monument?
