I guess I'm another person who hit them on an "off" night. The place is nice, the service was good, but the food just wasn't very good. It wasn't bad... just... not good Chinese food.

Best ginger beef in town. Another reason we like Louie's is we're almost always the youngest ones there (we're 56 & 64!)

My fiance and I decided to try Louie's after always driving by and seeing the parking lot full. I'm glad we did. Great food, good service, and good atmosphere.

Maybe my experience was an off night?!? The hubs and I ate here on a Monday evening after 8pm, two of the only patrons that evening. The server was nice, and the decor was just as awesome as my Grandma told me it would be. But... the food was wicked bland. Chow Mein and broccoli beef lacked flavor, and tasted like they came straight out of a can. Not nearly as tasty as Ballard Mandarin.

Judging from the comments here, it might be worth another try, tho.

Try the dry-rub peppered short rib appetizer....it's sinfully delicious

Fantastic place and people. Raymond and Greg, the front guys, both been there for years.Neverydisappointing. Everone misses Art Louie, who passed away a couple of years ago.

Really, really good American Chinese food. The Orange chicken, an entree that often leaves you unfulfilled at these type of restaurants, was probably the best I've ever had. Service was great (our server was funny and joked with us a lot on a Friday night), and we'll definitely be going back. Beats Ballard Mandarin by a long shot.

One of the few things in Ballard that has remained consistently old school. The restaurant equivalent to the Bardhal sign. Decent food, and funky decor.

Old school place, keeps it real. Never had a problem. Consistently good.
  • Spaghettio
    Best egg rolls ever.
  • I have been going to Louie's for YEARS (at least 15) and never had a bad meal. It's standard American Chinese and they do a decent job at it.

I've lived in Ballard for a long time, but never visited Louie's until just the last few years. That was a mistake - this is a nice place with very good quality food.

It's all pretty standardish Americanized Chinese style, but I've never been disappointed. The quality tends to be a step above the average for this genre.

The decor is interesting - it feels a lot like you just stepped back into the 70's but everything is very nice and well cared for, so it doesn't really feel like a 70's holdover, more like you are literally in a brand new classy restaurant in the 70's. Kinda hard to describe.

The first time I stopped in I was really kind of surprised at how nice everything was altogether. For some reason I just did not really expect it to be like that, I don't really know why. Maybe because it is off of a busy road it seems like it might be more like "convenience", but it is really more like "dining"...
