Has Gordo’s closed for good?

Posted by Geeky Swedes on July 1st, 2008

My Ballard reader Karen walked down to Gordo’s on Seaview to get a milkshake, but she discovered the burger shack was closed. She saw a sign in the window that said, “Thanks Ballard 27 years.”

We checked it out a couple days later and found these signs:

They’re closed through July, but the “Farewell” sign in the background makes it sound like it could be the end. Gordo’s is one of Ballard’s oldest restaurants, and it would certainly be sad to see them go.

Update: Gordo’s is indeed closing for good, and the very popular Paseo in Fremont is opening a new sandwich shop there.

  • The 'Thanks Ballard 27 years' has been there for a while. When I first saw it, I had to admit I was worried it meant they were closing too, but it just seemed to be a 'Hey, thanks. we've been here for 27 years' type sign.

Might that red stuff below 'Farewell' be something else on the sign, like it was for something else? Maybe I'll run by tomorrow and see what I see.

I like Gordo's quite a bit I hope they are back after July.

    Farewell seems kind of ominous...

But yeah it looks like there is something written underneath it, maybe a sign for a going away party that someone just happened to lean against the window?

Wow. Had not been there in ages!

I'm trying to recall if Gordo's was the first place that followed the Turbulent Turtle in that location.

Wasn't that the location of the small cafe called The Little Pebble in the 1960s? It was owned by the same people who owned The Windjammer fancy restaurant. Old...I feel very old....
  • Joel
Hmmmm, now that I dont remember georgie, although I thought The Little Pebble was the place in the Windjammer building, on the first floor (The Windjammer was upstairs). I often forget, it's the place where I really had my very first job - that lasted all of one day!

I remember the Turbulent Turtle being there in the seventies, but I don't remember what was there before that, if anything.

We went there yesterday and they'd hauled all their cooking/frying gear out into the back lot. I guess I assumed they were just doing some cleaning, but it did look kind of empty inside....

You guys thinking what I'm thinking? Landmark status! ;) Save Gordo's
  • My friends were there a couple weeks ago and the owner's son says they are closing for good. He also told them that Paseo - the cuban press sandwich place in fremont was going to be in there. He didn't say if it was an additional location or a replacement location.
  • Paseo?!?!? Paseo?!?!?

If this is true it is going to be so bittersweet. I don't want Gordo's to close, even though I've never been there (live about 5 minutes from them), but Paseo?!?!? I could WALK to a midnight cuban?

I'm REALLY going to have to start running more. It'll be midnight cubans once a week.

Paseo here!?! Bring it on!!!!!! That's worth a bike ride down the Gilman any day, for sure! We need something like Paseo down there. Let's face it: there's not a lot of food choices on that road that qualify as walk-it-out and super tasty. Paseo's would definitely equate to that!

i don't know gordo's so i won't miss it, but paseo would be phenomenal.
  • SarahJC
Wow - that's really too bad, I hate to see them closing.

On a lighter note - I've heard great things about Paseo, so hopefully we'll go from one good thing right into another!
  • Joel
Whoa, Paseo? Without having to drive to Fremont, find parking, and hope they aren't out of everything?? ;-) Now THAT is good news! Yum.
  • randi
i was going to start whining that id never been to gordos...i'd trade a place called "fatty's" for a place called "a walk" anyday for that type of food I can easily access....I work in fremont and live in golden gardens..yayyy
  • mom
after coming back from low tide, Gordo's looks as if they were doing a thorough cleaning of the place. didn't have a chance to chat w/them though.
  • Geeky Swedes
It's true, Paseo just told us they're opening a new location at Gordo's, hopefully by the end of the month. We just posted a new story on it. Thanks Shrewzard for the hot tip!!!

I will miss you pizza burger.

And as #1 pointed out, the sign "thanks Ballard for 27 years" has been there a while, I think about five years.... But that's gordos way.
