Preview the building replacing Sunset Bowl

Posted by Geeky Swedes on July 25th, 2008

This Monday night is the first design review meeting, but Avalon has already released its preliminary proposed designs for the apartment and retail building replacing Sunset Bowl on Market St.

This is its preferred design of the three proposals. It’s a six-story building with a center courtyard and 234 units. The building covers the entire block. The front (bottom) faces Market St. You can see Burger King to the left.

Here’s a look at the ground floor with 13,900 square feet of retail and 294 parking spots. Again, these are preliminary proposals without many details — there’s no mention of specific retailers (or a bowling alley), for example — but you get an idea of the building’s size. You can see the full deck here (.pdf). The first public design review meeting will be held Monday at 8 p.m. in the Ballard High School Library. (Thanks Marie for the link!)

What's with the funky shape of the building? I understand the whole "artistic" look - but I just think the slants and the weird angles are a little too much for a residential building.

Oh, I like that aspect, Sarah. IMHO it's the only thing that saves this thing from being another yawner! The who "making it Ballard like" is a crock of crap, of course, but nonetheless...

Of course, the real determining factor will be the retail that goes in ha ha. I think we all know what that will be! Also, I sure hope they keep their courtyard locked- the plan implies they will.

Now it will be interesting to see if people are upset about the lack of a bowling alley. Did people really think this could possibly happen? REALLY?

Only 28 commercial parking spaces for that much commercial space?

Guess you haven't lived in an old creaking craftsman...try finding a straight line in one of those.

I like its oddness and in Ballard when most people are used to walking I think having only 28 parking spots isn't that bad.

Uh, I don't get the joke. What will that be?

Ah, a 1927 beaut here. Just lifted it two and a half feet which was supposed to have straightened it up. STILL didn't work out that way!

Nail Salon. Maybe a national coffee place. Subway? Something somewhat ordinary, I'm thinking.

Speaking of Subway, I can't WAIT to see that turd of a building come down at the corner Market and Leary where the Subway shop is now. That spot is just begging for a majestic piece of architecture.

Hope the new residents love the smell of Burger Kings kitchen exhaust!
