‘Mutant bicycles’ descend on Ballard

Posted by Dale on August 2nd, 2008

Hundreds of colorfully dressed riders on often misshapen and mutant bicycles kicked off the 13th annual Dead Baby Downhill Race at El Chupacabra on Phinney Ridge Friday evening.

Friday’s race, which finished in Ballard, is part of a weekend of events celebrating mutant bicycle culture.

There was tall bike jousting, bands, bike dance perfromances and other activities at “the greatest party known to mankind,” which was held last night at the Bit Saloon and The Station along Leary.

Not to be confused with the Critical Mass, of course.

Damien - Great photos! It makes me wish I had gone. I wonder what other events this group organizes? Probably mostly burners, and will be ramping up for that pretty quick now.

Hope your eye is going to be okay!

I posted a Flickr photoset from that night - I was there from start to finish, and the evening was punctuated by me getting shot in the eye by a bottle rocket!

This party was a ton of fun! Rowdy but not destructive - definitely a good time!
  • @pioggia: It's OK, everyone had a reservation.
  • Although this group looks a little rough around the edges, they are a million times more mellow than Critical Mass. Critical Mass often seems to have a political agenda (even though it isn't supposed to), these folks just like riding bikes.

yours truly did in fact confuse them with Critical Mass, especially when a large bunch of them decided to ride into oncoming traffic, straight towards my car!

Awesome! Sadly, I don't have room to store a bike that looooong!
