‘Seattle Night Out’ is tonight

Posted by Geeky Swedes on August 4th, 2008

If you’re like us, you may have received an invitation to join your own block’s “Night Out” party this Tuesday night — an annual event to raise awareness for neighborhood crime prevention efforts. It’s also a great way to meet and mingle with your neighbors. The event runs from 6-9 p.m., and organizers are allowed to shut down their streets (as long as they’re not arterials and they don’t block the intersections.) You can also participate by turning on your porch light.

Update: The Ballard Community Center is hosting a big “Night Out” party.

Another update: Members of the Sunset Hill Community Association will be riding bikes around and handing out about 400 ice cream sandwiches. Yum!

Sucks. We live on an arterial and never get invited to any block parties :(

kcl, just show up to your closest. that is what we did a few years back and everyone is more than happy to know more of their neighbors.

Hmm. What's an arterial? I'm serious- I don't know what that is--- Has anyone north of 85th been invited to a block party?

If you live on an arterial (that is I believe a main street/intersection used for through traffic.), that doesn't mean that you can't get-together with your neighbors, it just means that you can't block off your street.

This is a great opportunity to get together to get to know your neighbors. Even people living in town homes and apartments/condos can participate. Think creatively, the purpose is to know your neighbors.

This is our 5th or 6th year having a block party. Every year it gets bigger: more kids, more families, a kiddie parade, a potluck, new neighbors and even past neighbors.

We all have each other's emails and phone numbers. Watch each other's homes while they are away. And happy hour every Friday evening during the summer months. It started small, but has now evolved to true friendships between us all.

Think simple to start. Take the initiative to organize something. Even if it's not tomorrow, it can be another time of the year (although you wouldn't be able to block your street legally for free).

We went to a neighborhood block party last weekend (they're doing a 2nd one tomorrow but we can't go...) and had a blast! it was so nice to meet a few more neighbors & put faces to the houses etc.

I'm super shy & my husband had to practically drag me, but everyone was friendly & welcoming and I'm really glad we went!

i live near salmon bay park and we have awesome block parties!

i heard somewhere that the ballard area has some of the best participation in the city in the night out block parties, but I can't hunt down the reference.

Does anyone know where to find participation by region information?
  • Where's the party at?

It's hit or miss from block to block. Our block in Loyal Heights is totally lame...no one shows up. But go one block over, and there's live music, rented kiddie play equipment, the works.
  • I live north of 85th, and last year we had a pretty ok block party. I don't know if we're having one this year, I haven't gotten anything about it...

If you live near 14th Ave NW, check out the potluck block parties the East Ballard Community Association is sponsoring at the NW 60th and NW 62nd block, plus another on 11th Ave NW between NW 60th and 61st. Even though 14th is an arterial, we applied online and didn't get refused. This will be our 3rd year blocking off 14th. We will also have a really cool raffle with lots of prizes donated by Ballard businesses and some music entertainment. Bring a chair and some food to share (optional) and come meet your neighbors!

We live on an arterial (north of 85th, no less) and we have a great turnout. I'm not sure what the designated boundaries for any specific block are, but people are really relaxed about it. We wandered around last year and said hi to several nearby groups, after spending most of the evening at our own. Great time!

jon, what's the latest on you getting that band?

400 ice cream treats were flung to the appreciative masses and gathered block-sters in the sunset hill district of ballard....what fun!!
stay tuned for pix and personal testimonials.

How do you sign up? We never got any information on how to register, and apparently nobody else on the block stepped up. I'd be willing to organize next year if I just knew where to start.
