Hamburger Harry’s now open

Posted by Geeky Swedes on August 5th, 2008

Ballard’s newest hamburger joint, Hamburger Harry’s on Market near 24th Ave., just opened its doors on Monday.

We stopped in and grabbed a menu. Harry’s offers a full array of burgers, from the standard fare to the Deluxe Burger Ciabatta, Jalapeno Popper Burger and Beer Cheese Burger. There are also plenty of chicken sandwiches and salads. All the burgers come with bottomless fries, and many of the ingredients are local: the buns are baked right down the street at Larson’s Bakery.

There’s also a full bar. If you eat here, please let us know what you think in comments below. (Thanks GB for letting us know it’s now open!)

A week or so ago we stopped with the whole family and had a great time. We loved the fries, burgers and milkshakes. Everything we ordered was really great. All of us would definitely recommend Hamburger Harry's! We had 6 people with us ages 14-52. Everyone really liked what they ordered and we all liked the atmosphere. It is all age friendly. The service was quick and friendly as well. I have to say we hadn't' enjoyed a hamburger like this in a long time.

I really enjoy Hamburger Harry’s. I work in Ballard and am always looking for places to get a good lunch quickly. I enjoy the blue cheese burger, it is great how the blue cheese is cooked into the middle, and the buns are amazing.
The best part is the service, I was seated quickly, my server was nice and competent. My lunch came out with enough time that I could enjoy it before going back to work. It has become one of my regular lunch spots.

Wow! What a great place to go! I visited Hamburger Harry's yesterday with my husband and son and we loved it! My husband and I both had the Gyro Burger and what a great purchase! It was so good. But not only that the service was good to! Also very clean. Hamburger Harry's is the place to go. Take my word and a tip...order some onion rings!
  • Maize
I went to Hamburger Harry's and the service was very prompt. I am 13 years old, and I loved the cheese curds, french fries and sliders. I would like to have color crayons for the kids.
It was fun to go to Archie McFees afterwards!
  • Billy
Take my word I am a hamburger junky, and this is the best burger in Seattle for the dollar. Not the easiest place to get into, but worth the try. Great cheeseburger with fries and full service for under $8.00. You gotta love this place.

I went back there again on Saturday with my fiancé's brother from the East Coast. We went to the Seahawks game which went into overtime and afterwards we were starving. Since he was in town for a few days I wanted to show him a cool place in Ballard so we waited half an hour for the bus and finally made it to Hamburger Harry's right before 11. I walked in and was greeted enthusiastically by Danny, who remembered me by name from the week before. Being so close to 11 I asked if the kitchen was still open. Danny wasn't sure but when he came back from asking the kitchen staff he happily said to order whatever we wanted.

The food again was delicious. I had the beer cheese burger and I thoroughly enjoyed it. My future brother-in-law was a little less adventurous and had the bacon cheeseburger, which he loved. We both agreed the fries were awesome. They will definitely be part of my next Ballard French Fries Tour which includes fry tasting at Bad Albert's, People's Pub, and Old Town Alehouse. I guess I should plan to stop by Swedish afterwards as well.

To sum up, I will go back again soon.

We ate there tonight (Monday Aug 18th). My wife, friend and I were all VERY happy with the experience! The beer was good, the cheese curds were great, fries were great (not soggy like others have said) and the burgers were fantastic. A couple of mixups on our food - I had the BBQ burger but bacon was left off (trust me, I didn't miss it) and my wife ordered the bacon cheeseburger but got the bacon/cheese/guac burger instead but was very happy. Our friend had the jalapeno popper burger and loved it. From my perspective (a burger lover) this was the best I'd had in a long time. Our server was Danny and he was phenomenal; a great personality. We were immediately seated, never had to wait for drink refills, and were checked in on frequently. I will definitely be back - there are about 5 more burgers on the menu I'd like to try, and given the service there, I'll be back soon!

I don't hang out in bars. Your place I felt very comfortable in Love the open windows Great fries and the hamburger was great... good meat!! . You have my email -- I'd like to buy a T shirt and do some subliminal advertising for you Gordy

I ate there last night. It was awesome. Kid frien dly too. Nice greeting from the owners son? and the burger was awesome. Flat schreen TV's everywhere, not too loud, and the autographs on the walls are a good touch. I'll be back time and time again. Ballard has a new hot spot!

Harrys= House of delightfull beefy morsels.

this place is bizzzomb. quit hatin start eating, you beezies.

My fiancé and I ate there last night and it was a great experience. We had Danny as our server and he was one of the most enthusiastic servers I have seen in a long time. Mike, the 'bouncer' type gooner mentioned above, was very nice. He seems genuinely excited about the place. I told him about this blog and he was very curious. He was very open to the feedback I mentioned they were getting here and especially about the beer selection (he mentioned he received some of the same comments in person). He seems like the type to take that feedback and consider making adjustments as they are able to.

On to the food. We ordered onions rings to start the night off right and they hit the spot. They were thinner than most onion rings you get around here and the batter was a little flakier but they had an excellent flavor. The burgers were excellent. I had the blue cheese and it was extremely tasty and a bit messy, as expected from the description on the menu. My fiancé had the gyro burger and that was one of the more interesting styles of burger I had ever seen. It, too, was excellent but just be prepared for a lot of onions and feta. We felt the pricing was very fair based on what you get and what other good burger joints in town charge for their food.

To round out my report I have to say I was impressed by the layout and cleanliness of the men's restroom. The sports memorabilia on the walls is also very interesting while not being too imposing. We also enjoyed being able to watch a bit of the Olympics on the flat screen TVs and liked how the volume was not on so we could easily tune them out when we wanted to. Overall, this is a great place to have in the neighborhood and I hope they do well for a long time to come.

Just came home from my third vist to Hamburger Harry`s. The hamburgers were really good all three times. There is a very mixed crowd of all ages including children. l have never been in a place open for such a short time that had such good service and product. All l can honestly say about Hamburger Harry`s is WOW!!!!!!!
  • I ate here this weekend. The burger was great but the fries were sloppy with grease. I ordered the wings and was shocked that they were not only really spicy (a great thing), but also full of flavor. They might be a bit pricey, but they're some damn good wings. Also, the wait staff rocked! Bess was my server.
  • m
doh - *meat - sloppy typing not sloppy spelling - really!!! duh...
  • m
I know I'm late but have to toss in my 2 cents....

Large menu but came away after a bbq pepper bacon burger actually craving meet. So much stuff on said burger that the little meat patty was incidental. Some might favor the "deluxe" toppings but they negated the whole point of a burger for me. And the fries? Just Dick's fries for a too high price. Truly - Dick's fries...

All that said - their waitstaff rocked. Responsive and friendly and quick quick quick. Unfortunately a great waitstaff isn't enough to bring me back.
  • GMR
I think that $10 is expensive for a burger. Anyone else? Or maybe the food is that good?
  • Lindsarella
Pulled on the door of Harry's before it even opened- Mac N Jacks and a burger? Sounds like a perfect Sunday afternoon! Thanx for the reviews!
  • CaffinatorX
GB and Joey - point taken that it's rude to dis sports lovers (ie: most of the world) but um, what's wrong with being buddist or not using a plastic bag? Not sure how those are related. Is there something shameful about that?
  • edog
Hey Joey? Why would you respond to negative comments by calling people bitter losers? You're doing the same thing they did by passing judgement out of ignorance. It's a blog and you don't know each other. I'll bet if the three of you and GB grabbed a beer together at Harry's you'd have a good burger and a laugh...maybe even a good ball game.
  • GB
Joey: I completely agree with you!!

So much negativity and pessimism exists out there! Let's give this place a chance.
  • Joey
    "
Looks like a frat boy hangout to me…which definately a book you can judge by looking at the cover."

"Of course, the sports crowd atmosphere could ruin it if they attract the idiot element, but I guess we’ll see."

WOW, some of you are such bitter losers. Apparently the only way not to be an idiot is to be a vegan loving, denounce whatever religion you might have been raised in to become buddhist, no plastic bag using REAL Seattlite.

You people annoy me, move back to San Fran where you belong.
  • Dina
I had the jalapeno popper burger. Almost had a heart attack due to all the toppings but my oh my - yummy!
  • gooner
i am with you on that one jesse. didn't know about the behind the scenes going's on, but i know tha they drove manny out and manny's is one damn fine beer.

had it at my wedding 4 years ago and it is still just as delicious.
  • Rounder
Ill agree to that gooner..they do need more taps..and outdoor seating
  • Jesse
There's definitely no need to carry African Amber when there's two superior breweries than Mac n' Jacks just down the street.

Besides, the Mac 'n Jack guys are notoriously shady business men-- which I guess we should be thankful for, since if they had never screwed Manny Chao out of promised partial ownership after he doubled their tap handles in one year, we'd never have Georgetown Brewing Co. (Yes, that's right, Manny's Pale Ale.)
  • GB
    "Harry's burgers beat Red Mill"
Wow! I gotta try one of their burgers...
  • SH
Had dinner there Wednesday night, 3 days after they opened. They were slammed. Word is out and Ballard is curious! Most of the tables were filled but we were greeted and seated promptly in the bar area. They have one giant TV and four large flat screen TVs, showing a couple of different MLB games. Drinks arrived promptly, food arrived within 15 minutes during a peak time. Servers were friendly, and apologized for things being a bit harried. A few people came in the front door but were not greeted right away, and so turned around and left, probably thinking it was "not a good time right now". (a "See Host / Seat Yourself" sign would be a good thing).

The burgers were very good. I had a bacon cheese burger and my partner had the beer cheese burger. Ask for extra napkins. Juicy and delicious. The fries could have been better...they were limp and swimming in oil. More time in the fryer and strainer should do it.
Harry's burgers beat Red Mill, we both agreed.

    Definitely worth a return visit."
  • gooner
mel, funny, i thought of that too, the buns were significantly larger than the burgers.

rounder.... not saying that mac n jacks is as bad as coors, just saying that it is so predictable. when doesn't a bar open up without mac n jacks these days. IMHO it really isn't that good... but that is my opinion, i realize people like it. but with 6 or 7 taps... how about some originality.
  • Rounder
Just got back from Harrys, nice staff, good atmosphere. Very warm but thats the weathers fault.., had the guacamole burger and wife had the chipotle burger..both were very good, fries were good..not to greasy..we will definitely go back..im still not sure if they beat Zaks as far as burgers go...
  • Mel
I had lunch there today. Ordered the Beer Cheeseburger, and while it was fairly good and juicy, the beef patty was smaller than the bun it was sitting in. The fries, big and thick-cut, are decent, if not a bit too greasy for my liking. They've given an adequate portion of food, so I didn't order a second helping of fries or dessert (the perky, middle-aged blonde waitress said they have yet to sell a single dessert because everyone was full!).

I would've complained about the bun > patty, but I was extremely hungry and being this is their first week and the waitress being so nice, I'll let it slide for now. Decent place and decent food, if not a total standout burger joint.

    3/5
  • Rounder
woah woah woah there gooner..Mac n Jack is the nectar of the gods...yes..coors and bud are piss water..but thats blasphemy to have coors and mac n jack in the same sentance..
  • Seattlejo
There were kids under 21 in there when I was there. i didnt look for a kids menu, but its also clearly not Red Robin.
  • gooner
oh, and beer selection stunk. if you try to have gourmet beer, you should put a little thought into your beer selection. of course you have all the usuals, bud light, mac n jacks, coors. ugh.

the only decent one on there was mirror pond.

oh well, i will be getting my beer at the dray still
  • gooner
Sitting at the bar at harrys as I type this on my phone. So just a few things.

Yes looks kid friendly. There are kids sitting in here right now.

Sports on TV but volume turned off

The guy who I presume is the owner looks like he could be a bouncer. Big guy with quite a tan. Gave me a fake air punch to the stomach as he handed me the menu.was surprised he didn't call me bra.

Food. Pretty tasty. Red robin type prices but better quality I think. Fries are of the similar mould to those served up at dad watsons.

Overall not a bad place but nothing phenomenal. Would pick red mill every time.
  • John
I'm looking forward to trying Harry's, and am pumped to have a new hamurger joint in the heighborhood.. the flat screens i will enjoy, bc hey, i like sports. (but i'm not one to yell at the screen or wear jerseys. i just sit back and watch. so you don't have to worry about me).
  • NAG
Did anybody see any kids there? Also wondering if it's family-friendly.
  • angrignon
I stopped by a few days ago and had a BBQ Burger + Fries. It was good.

Its nice to see a small hotdog/chicken place open up in Ballard, as we have no Red Mill or Fatburger here. While Ballard Brothers and Zak's is fine (zak's gets a thumbs down on the slooooooow service) and scooters I have been totally turned off by, Hamburger Harrys is a nice addition. I just wish it was a few more blocks east.

Also, the booze is a plus. I'd rather get crunk in there than at the Sloop Tavern for fear I'd be molested outside by the grassy-patch inuit gang.

Of course, the sports crowd atmosphere could ruin it if they attract the idiot element, but I guess we'll see.
  • I also stopped by Hamburger Harry's. I had the Blue Cheese stuffed burger. The stuffed burgers are kind of interesting -- it looks like they actually cut open the meat and stuff the filling into the patty. Interesting concept, but it probably made the meat harder to cook, as it was a bit inconsistent.

There's a lot of space on the inside, and with a full bar, it's a great place for a larger party to get some drinks and food. They play old 80's music, but not loud enough to not hold a conversation. They're definitely aiming for the sports crowd -- with multiple large TVs playing ESPN2.

The service was friendly, and I give them credit for using some local ingredients. That said, I'm not entirely sure I'll be back, personally, as I'm put-off by the whole sports bar feel. However, if I'm with a group of friends whose primary interest is quick food and drinks, it might be higher up on the list of places to check out.
  • toudios
they've got *much* more on their menu (the menu copy i grabbed is missing some ink) but i figured i'd at least get the burgers down for you folks, as i couldn't find a website or menu online prior to checking them out.

I *just* got home from dinner at Hamburger Harry's. I was immediately and warmly greeted at the door, and took a seat at the bar. flat screens showed sports, autographed photos of sports legends adorn the walls. comfortale place with about 20 folks inside visibly enjoying their meals and beverages. i had the Jalapeno Popper Burger (it took about 4 minutes to be presented from time of order, which was impressive). they "stuff roasted jalapenos, cream cheese and cheddar cheese into a burger, bread it and deep fry it to a crunch, with lettuce, pico de gallo and guacamole." the all-natural beef is from Mystic Farms on Vashon, and the bun from Larsen's Bakery really did taste as though it was actually baked this morning. very nice change from the standard. the fries are "bottomless hand cut" but i couldn't possibly have had another serving, as the burger was pretty big and the amount of fries more than adequate. i know it's only their second day, so we'll see how this place takes shape, but the first impression was solid.
  • CK
    Vegetarian friendly? Ha!
  • Lazlo
Good question ets. I dont see a rail seperating the bar from the rest of the seats. If I can I will walk by tonight.
  • ets
anyone know if it's kid friendly?
  • GB
Wow, you were driving around at 5am - nice work!
  • G Dub
I may not eat there just based on the sign. I drove down 24th this past week at 5:00 am and I could see the glow from 4 blocks away. Ever notice the best restarants seem to have non descript signs? If you have to yell it, the food is typically not that good. By the way GB, your Red Robin reference is not helping your case.
  • boardbrown
Looks like a frat boy hangout to me...which definately a book you can judge by looking at the cover.
  • GB
Hey Sean, did you take a look at the interior photo? The last time I checked, you can't have a beer or mixed bevy @ Johnny Rockets. I take it that you never eat at Red Robin because they use "gourmet" when referencing their burgers. You're jumping to conclusions before you give it a chance... Judging a book by its cover.

I'm very curious to hear the reviews on this place! They got some flat screens, cool looking bar. It appears to be a nice place to watch a game, etc.

I plan to check it out this week!!
  • Joshua
That bar looks great! Can't wait to ry it out.
  • I saw this the other day when I was coming down 24th to Market St. I must say, the outside made me think "Johnny Rockets," which then made me think "Ugh, I bet it's horrible." While I'm glad to hear they are using some local ingredients, I have a rule that I never eat somewhere that uses the word "gourmet" to describe themselves.
