Thieves steal safe at Tigertail

Posted by Geeky Swedes on September 1st, 2008

Tigertail was closed Monday after thieves broke into the restaurant.

The break-in happened overnight Sunday. The thieves smashed a small window in the roll-up door and squeezed inside. They made off with the safe, according to a business next door that was told about the break-in.

If you have any information regarding the crime, please contact the folks at Tigertail. (Thanks Gooner for the tip).

Update: Could it be the same burglar responsible for hitting 45 stores in the North Seattle area in the last few weeks?

  • Shocking, more crime in Ballard. Do the police care at this point?
  • gooner
oh, also the sneakery got broken into as well...

so to add more melo drama hear-say speculation to this... i was talking to the guys from crash landing pizza about this and they said that some of the tiger tail employees suspected that the robbers lived in a rather sketchy house that is across the street from the sneakery.

apparently it is a known 'crack house'

everything i hear is pure word of mouth...

    just saying
  • kim
or they probably live behind some trash bins in the alley.
  • milo dakkat
Where is Tiger Tail? I can't place it.
  • Tiger Tail is on 65th, near 8th. North side of the street.
  • Spaghettio
    Crack is whack...
  • Evan
That's funny - because when we were walking back from grabbing a coffee on Monday morning - past the "crack" house - we noticed that someone was stealing water from the adjacent house for sale (to the south) and piping it all the way across the driveway and then into a downstairs window. We assumed "grow house".

Does anyone know about that house? Or what we would need to do to get some attention to it?
  • Evan
In other news - someone tagged the inside of a car up on 7th and 67th. Not sure what the purpose of that is - but the cops were out investigating it on Saturday.
  • fringe
maybe send a note to the realtor of the neighboring house. pretty sure the "crack house" is responsible for it being on the market for over a year.

there are some regular patrons of the sketchy house. once walked by a couple passed out and drooling in their car on 6th. they stop by every other day.

incidently, a demo permit was pulled for this house but the developers seems to be holding off and i'm guessing that it's an attractive weekly rental.
  • Evan
I'd be happy to start that conversation. Our little retail strip can't take much "stress". Does anyone have easy access to the realtors info?
  • Evan
Barring that maybe I'll take a closer look and call the cops.
  • jm
Sounds like your block watch group is swinging into action.
  • fringe
it's swanberg or something, you should be able to find contact info on redfin or zillow.
  • i highly doubt the people in the house on 6th and 65th did the Tigertail break-in. There have been about 40 retail robberies in the area in the last few months. King 5 did a story on it a while back. I'll try to find the link and post it. This is the work of someone who knows how to open safes.
  • Here's a story about the robberies. The police know it's going on, the mayor's office knows it's going on, and they still won't do more patrols. http://www.king5.com/localnews/stories/NW_07210...
  • Evan
I still think that the hose thing is fishy.
  • gooner
drea, you may be right, and like i said it was pure speculation, but for the record, they didn't "open" the safe, they removed it completely. unbolted it from the floor and left with it. all 200 lbs of it
  • boardbrown
Forget the "conversation". Let's just start in with the demo.

I'll be happy to show up with the Hi-Boy and a 10 pound sledge.

"pretty sure the “crack house” is responsible for it being on the market for over a year."

    "We assumed “grow house”.

Ahhh, Old Ballard!! How I won't miss it when these fine folks can't afford to live here anymore.
  • Spaghettio
"Ahhh, Old Ballard!! How I won’t miss it when these fine folks can’t afford to live here anymore."

You are a f#&%ng ignorant moron....this can happen in Bellevue (and your precious oh so fancy New York where you probably should go rot) just as much as it can happen anywhere...I am glad my neighbors are nosy (and "poor"). They have more class in their little finger than you will have in your entire life...Copy and paste! Copy and paste! Tee hee!
  • Suthii
"Copy and paste! Copy and paste!"

Well I guess some folks are still sentimental for Old Ballard and criminals ......
  • Suthii
    "this can happen in Bellevue"

I guess Old Ballardites get around a bit.
  • Suthii
From what I hear from Old Ballardites on this blog, the neighborhood the 80s-90s was a crime ridden sh*t hole. Is that what the Nativists miss? Maybe the crazy ones.
  • jm
There always seems to be some shady looking characters hanging out on that block.
  • boardbrown
Ten bucks says it's meth...not crack.

Oh, and Evan's comment above reminds me of the time I came back from out of town unexpectedly and caught my next door neighbor pressure washing his shitty vinyl siding with his machine hooked up to my hose bib.

His excuse? "Uh, I thought you were out of town." That was 3 years ago now, and not a word has been spoken between us since.

Sometimes neighbors suck, even in Ballard.
  • Evan
Well, here's the "exciting" update on the house at 6th and 65th:

I called the agent about the hose linking the two houses this morning, and he was surprised that it was back again, he had spoken to a tenant of the corner house (working on his car in the corner house driveway) about it last Tuesday in response to someone else calling; and that tenant had said he would talk to the other tenant that was doing it. The guy working on the car had no idea why/what was going on in the basement. The agent uncoupled the hose.

He is going back again today and promises to call back with an update.
  • Uhhh, who told you Ballard used to be crime ridden?
Ballard used to be the quietest place ever. Why do you think everyone moved here? It was brilliant back then. It is only now that there are so many people here to steal from that theft is rampant.
Wealth and density bring crime. Who would you steal from in the ghetto? No one, there is nothing worth taking!
In Ballard, there are cars and bikes and safes aplenty these days. It is a thieve's dream come true.
  • Evan
    "Wealth and density bring crime."

I may be "New Ballard" but I'm pretty shocked by the attitude of Bella on this one. I think there are alot of positive outcomes as well.
  • gooner
yeah there is no crime in the ghetto ever. everyone gets along nicely.
  • I didn't say that there are no positives, but people rarely accept that as a downside. I also never said that people get along in the ghetto, just that I don't think they steal from each other as much, cuz like I said, there is nothing to steal.
Seriously though, I never heard anyone complain about crime here until the average price of a house went over a half a million. That's all I'm saying.
  • Suthii
    “Wealth and density bring crime.”

Really? Ever been to Tokyo? 17 million people, plenty of them rich, and you can leave your wallet on the street and get it back.

Wealth and density don't create crime, socially maladjusted criminals do.
  • fringe
    thanks evan

jm, there's just enough shadiness to keep you wary, but it's really a great block and very tight neighborhood.
  • suthii
I guess it's our own fault for dangling our 'wealth' out there and tempting these poor folks into robbing us.

FYI I'm pretty sure it wasn't a yuppie who stole my neighbor's car recently but I guess his Chevy Malibu just screamed 'rob me, I'm rich'.
  • It is amazing how differently comments are taken than they are meant to be.
All I'm saying is that if I were a career criminal, Ballard seems like a pretty darn good place to work to me. Plenty of people living here these days have nice stuff to steal.
Previously, the neighborhood was largely populated by older people, who probably didn't seem like they had a lot of good stuff to take.
    It used to be quiet.
I'm not saying that it is right, or that it is the fault of anyone living in the neighborhood.
I simply made an observation based on being familiar with Ballard over the years.
  • Evan
    Bella -

Sorry to jump to conclusions. I can see your perspective, but I'm just not sure that crime is any different now than it was then. It would be an interesting comparison to look at.

Oh - and I would LOVE a hot Chevy Malibu.
  • db
Pay no attention to Suthii. He's a maladjusted bomb-thrower with no better outlet than to rile people up on local websites.
  • Evan, I would totally steal the heck outta someone's Chevy Mailbu too.
  • carl
no they dont care. they said they wouldnt assign a detective until we came up with some more information. i guess i should go talk to huggy bear and get the word.
