Construction along 14th Ave NW

Posted by Geeky Swedes on October 7th, 2008

Northbound 14th Ave NW was closed today around 58th St for a road project.

Department of Transportation crews are digging up the median along the northbound lanes. We’re checking with SDOT to get details of the project.

Update: Noah reminds us in comments that this may be part of the 14th Ave NW beautification project that we wrote about in August. “Yes, you’re right,” says Dawn from the 14th Ave NW Steering Committee. “SDOT is installing natural irrigation curb extensions that will filter storm water through plants before it drains into the storm sewer that leads directly into Salmon Bay. They’re also building up the median so we can install an additional planting area, plus provide a pedestrian refuge in the center of the intersection to make crossing the street much safer.”

  • Yes, you're right. SDOT is installing natural irrigation curb extensions that will filter storm water through plants before it drains into the storm sewer that leads directly into Salmon Bay. They're also building up the median so we can install an additional planting area, plus provide a pedestrian refuge in the center of the intersection to make crossing the street much safer. The 14th Ave NW Visioning Project steering committee has been working hard over the past few years to implement big changes on 14th that improves safety and creates green space. Although this project doesn't match the vision exactly, it's a small step in the right direction. If you're interested in becoming involved in this project, please send an email to dawnh@14avenw.org or stop in and chat with Dave Smith (the owner of Blowing Sands Glass) at the nw intersection of 14th and 58th.

p.s. The 14th Ave Project is now working with Avalon Bay Communities to pursue improvements on 14th between Market and NW 56th. Stay tuned!

The main reason for this is probably because of the number of car and pedestrian accidents at that intersection. A very dear friend suffered fatal injuries at this intersection when hit by a car. They are extending the curbs out a bit and having the median area a bit elevated. At least this is what it looked like on the plans.
