Wear your Scandinavian sweater Thursday

Posted by Geeky Swedes on October 8th, 2008

Dig through your closet and pull out your Scandinavian sweater. After all, tomorrow (Thursday) is Leif Erikson day. “The first group of Norwegian immigrants (after Leif Erikson) led by Cleng Peerson, landed in New York City on October 9, 1825 on the sloop ‘Restauration.’ In honor of the day, wear your Scandinavian sweater,” says Jules in the MyBallard forum. And good timing: tomorrow will be one of the cooler fall days so far, with a high of 51 degrees.

What exactly is a "scandanavian" sweater? A description would be helpful.

boardbrown - welcome to the exciting new world of Al Gore's "internet" - it's great that your first stop was directly to this messageboard, but know that there are a myriad of sites that you can also visit that will help you in the years to come. try using the following "website" to find answers to the many puzzling questions you will undoubtedly be vexed by: http://www.google.com .

OK I just have to ask: shouldn't we be wearing our Thor's hammers (or if we want to be more Hollywood our Viking helmets.)? Not that I object to an excuse to wear my lovely Scandahoovian sweater, it just doesn't say Leif Erikson to me.

But regardless of attire I'm sure all us Vinlanders can agree to raise a glass of wine in his memory :->
  • gahh! where can i get one?!

I was merely trying to instigate some fun chatter about gawdy sweaters. Don't be a dick, toudios.

Play nicely! BTW, Icelandic or Norwegian sweaters are hardly "gaudy".... you must be thinking of some other ethnic group. (note spelling of "gaudy.")

OK, where to get a Scandinavian sweater:

Scandinavian Specialties on 15th, across the street from Ballard High School.

Classic Consignment on 24th and 56th. (for the record, I just brought one in there last week, so that might still be there.) They usually have quite a few.

The other consignment and vintage shops around- there are a couple on Market and there is a thrift store on 24th below 80th that has them sometimes. The other places to check in Ballard are the "R Shoppe" on Ballard Avenue (the Ryther Center thrift store) and Goodwill on 8th.

Wear your Scandinavian (Norwegian or Icelandic) on Saturday for Artwalk!

OK so they're anything but stylin' and I wouldn't be caught dead in mine in Belltown, but many of them are actually pretty, with some lovely craftsmanship & detailing. Plus they are OH so warm & toasty. I only wear mine to play in the the snow normally because it's a bit much for anything above 35 farenheidt.
