Big turnout at Ballard voting places

Posted by Geeky Swedes on November 4th, 2008

The scene at Trinity Methodist church on 23rd Ave. & 65th St. this morning:

King County says it expects an 85 percent turnout today — a new record. It’s also expecting a crush of absentee votes.

Despite the crowds, county officials say everything is going smoothly so far. Let us know about your voting experience in comments below, and you can email us any photos. (Photos from Jason M. Burrows. Thanks Jason!)

there was a hefty turnout at West Woodland Elementary this morning. The poll workers said the line started forming at 6:30am!

Their PTA always does a bake sale on election days & they're clearly expecting a huge turnout - I've NEVER seen so many cookies, cakes etc. on the tables. I'm really going to miss this when we go to all mail-in ballots!

Sunset Hill Community Center was busier than I've ever seen it today when I was in at around noon.

I was at SHCC this morning around 10am and it was pretty busy -- not too long a wait to sign in, but all booths & tables taken for filling out the ballot. They said they were really busy when they opened, but it had slowed down since the first hour.

Snoqualmie Elementary School was dead at 8am. A slow trickle of senior citizens. Absolutely zero signs announcing it was the voting center for the area. I got completely lost.

Inside felt like a funeral. Zero organization, zero efficiency. I was told their one electronic machine had already died and was forced to use a paper ballot.

I walked away totally depressed. Nothing like the vibrant atmosphere of Cap Hill's past...

Did anyone in Ballard see Darcy Burner on their ballot? I swear I did, and I didn't think she would be on ours
  • it's awesome that there has been this "problem" of long lines all over... people taking a greater interest in public issues is always a good thing

Nag. Darcy Burner was on the king county ballots, not Seattle.

Sunset Hill was busy but no wait at about 11am. Typically I'm #70 something (counted on the ballot-taking-machine thingee) but today I was in the 500s! Hurray! The pollworker I chatted with said she has never seen so many people voting there ever before. Everyone I met walking to the center was SMILEY and happy and joyous to be doing this. And EVERYONE complained about not being able to vote in person next time!!!

I always go to polls as opposed to voting absentee. I like the ritual and I enjoy see my neighborhood seniors staffing my polling place. But this time and best of all - there were two volunteers under the age of 25, young people engaging in the process.

Yes we can - and we all must join in working towards our future. I was thrilled to see two individuals who had already started down that path.

    Thank you

I just read on the Secretary of State's web pages that the percentage of registered voters in King County who voted in this election was only 33%.

That is pretty shameful, I think. I would have thought we would be over 50% at the very least.
