Cat shot with pellet gun

Posted by Geeky Swedes on November 10th, 2008

We received this email from My Ballard reader Danya:

Just wanted to get the word out that someone in Ballard shot my cat with a pellet gun. I live on 22nd Ave NW between 80th and 83rd. I think it happened sometime during last week. I just discovered the pellet lodged in her side and was able to take it out with tweezers. Thankfully she is doing just fine and recovering well. Hopefully this is a one time incident and not something we’ll see again.

the world is not your cats' litterbox. but as long as you think so...don't expect EVERYBODY else to agree. Why should I tolerate your pet...when it only comes into my yard to shit and kill birds!? I don't shit in my yard...and when I shit in YOURS I won't be surprised if I get a pellet or two...or three.

I was nice to my neighbors cat for years and it slid into my garage the 5 or sominutes I stepped out(I work there/home biz)and when I returned, it ran past me; from my garage. I smelled cat piss...did some looking and found that cat had peed on an antique dresser that I had just moved out to store in the garage a week earlier.

the ONLY reason the pet control laws are not enforced against cats is because there are just too damn many of them. Everytime it rains here, the first thing you smell in the air is the evaporating cat piss.

If you cannot have a pet that you(who have obviously chosen to NOT take complete responsibility for)can keep at home...then you have nobody to blame but yourself...regardless of what happens.

Let me just say that my garage and or yard is not a happy place for a cat to be found. You don't like it?...keep your unwanted(if we wanted a cat we w0uld have one) litte demon at home. many of us consider them an unwanted and invasive species...like weeds but with fur.

just so all you inbred uneducated gun toting confederates know...

shooting an animal even if it is on your property is prosecutable as animal cruelty and can carry a sentence of 2yrs in prison and a hefty fine in most states.

You think it is harmless? Tell that to the people who's animals have missing eyes or have died b/c of internal bleeding and organ failure from being shot by harmless pellet guns.

Ask any psychiatrist about the steps to becoming a psychotic with homicidal tendencies. One of the steps is violence to animals. Are you mentally stable?

You let your kids play in dirt? Have you never heard of the parasitic infestations children get that eat holes in their brains and can cause death? They got it from playing in dirt, cat poop or not. You're unfit parents and retarded human beings for not knowing. BTW get a fence, you don't live on a farm.

Next time your kids ride their tricycle over my lawn you better get them xrayed. They may have some pellets in their skull shot point blank through their eye socket for being on my property.

The ppl who leave their cats roaming outside need to be more intelligent also. Get a collar, get a chip, get a wireless perimeter installed. If you really cared about your pets you wouldn't play russian roulette with their lives by letting them roam free.

i was wondering if you knew the best way to take care of a cat that was shot with a pellet gun just behind the shoulder blade. I would love to simply take him to the vet. Only I am barely making it as it is and all research shows a vet bill of at least 200.00 or more. He is not in any pain and moves around and plays as usual. He has always been temperamental and that has not changed either. If you can help please do. Any advise will be taken.

I am not a vet, but was an Army medic and EMT for many years. If the wound has healed over the pellet, then to the vet it must go for immediate removal! Pellets are made of lead, and as such, leech lead into the bloodstream. This can lead to catastrophic organ failure over time, mainly affecting kidneys in cats. Otherwise, just clean up the wound area as best you can using hydrogen peroxide (it will sting, so you will have to find a way to immobilize the cat -- a friend all gloved up with heavy clothing usually works best. And don't forget to talk to your cat to help calm and sooth it! They DEPEND on you.) After this, apply Triple Antibiotic Ointment (Wal-mart, Walgreen’s, etc.) to the affected area three times a day for three days. Next, you just monitor the cat and let the wound heal. They have amazing recuperative powers. And for God’s sake NEVER give your cat aspirin!!!

Hope this helps, and wish your cat well for me :)

What I have found to be an effective pet deterrent as anything out there I can find--and more humane than most--is the multi-pump air rifle.

With these types of airguns, serious injury to the animal can be avoided while still delivering a message they will never forget. All you need do is pump it no more than two or three times, and it his has not only enough power to remain accurate, but impart one helluva sting to the animal. I have done this quite often, and no animal that I hit ever came back to annoy me, much less got seriously hurt.

You can pick one of these humane/neighbor friendly air rifles up at your local Wal-Mart in Daisy .177 caliber format model #88OS for less than $45.00 to include tax and a tin of 250 pellets. These rifles, when used for these kinds of situations, is a win-win situation for everyone involved.

Let me tell you why I say that: by placing a carefully aimed pellet at the rump area of the offending animal you not only deliver your message loud and clear without seriously wounding it, you keep your ass out of court should you get caught, which in turn keeps money in your pocket and, most importantly, a criminal record off your back. This all assumes that the owner of said animal isn't planing on tracking you down in order to go postal on your ass when you least expect it.

For what it's worth, there it is. Now let's get the word out!

keep my cat out of your yard and you'll keep your pellets out of my cat? ya mkkkk.. guaranteed you have a pet that at some point had went into a neighbors yard at some time even if it were an accident.. you people are sick, honestly, actually no you're disgusting.. you can shoot an animal and feel absolutely no remorse it's people like you that i pray to god has mercy on
  • AJM
An inside cats a better idea... and you can't just blame this on the pellet gun the only thing those injure are squirrels. WHO LIKES SQUIRRELS?
  • Jimmy
Keep your cats out of my yard and I'll keep my pellets out of your cat. Fair deal?
  • kLa*
my cat was just shot with a BB gun tonight and is suffering terribly. i do not care who you are there is no reason to hurt an innocent animal.. they deserve the right to go outside too would you like to be cooped up in the house all day long everyday!! if you aren't a cat lover but you have another animal would you like it if someone shot that animal no you wouldn't!! it's not just cats it's all animals put yourself in that persons shoes.. my cat IS my baby and has been since i got her and she does not deserve to have to suffer because of someone else's immaturity. all you people who are telling her to quit crying.. put yourself in her shoes with your animal and have a heart. i'm going through the same thing she is and it's a terrible feeling when your pets become your family members.
  • Responsability
I am willing to bet if you didn't let the cat roam around unattended it wouldn't get shot. I have a cat and keep indoors. I have a real problem with people that are irresponsable and let their cats use my gardens as a litter box. Quit crying about your irresponability.
  • Deadeye
Gee, is this the same cat that's been brutalizing our own yard-contained cats? The one whose owners just shrugged when the neighbors (from several houses) went over to ask that the animal be contained from bullying and pooping all around the block? The one that tries to sneak into our house when we have the door open to bring in groceries? The aggressive one our kids are scared of?

If so, I want my pellets back. I'm obviously going to need to reuse them since some people would rather whine than control their animals. And be glad it was me who hit the beast and not the guy across the street (who bought a BB gun to keep the animal from terrorizing his own) or the guy next door (who prefers a slingshot). Or, if you are that owner and you really do insist that your cat deserves the run of the entire neighborhood plus the busy park across the street, be glad it wasn't a car or the raccoons.

And the next time that little wretch walks into my kitchen and pees, you should look for it at the shelter. If I'm feeling charitable, it'll be a no-kill, but I wouldn't count on that.

In response to Ep's comment, yeah, punk kids will always be around...and it's fine w/ me if punk kids want to hang out, smoke pot and raise whatever kind of hell they like (I mean we've all been there), but abuse against animals takes someone straight past being a punk kid and right into being an evil sociopath...animal abuse is often a precurser to violence against humans, and i'm disgusted that you are so quick to excuse it as "boys being boys" behavior.

Why don't you keep you cat inside so other people don't have to pick up its poop from their gardens? My kids can't play in our garden because so many neighborhood cats use it a litterbox. I don't let my kids poop in your yard, keep your animals poop in yours.

shitty bumfights mmmmmhhh. was it Rufus?
  • Bryan
That is horrible. I'm glad you were able to get the pellet out.
Personally I keep my cats indoors where I believe them to be in a safer location than the outdoors.

    angrignon: yuck.
  • angrignon
I bet they were aiming at the homeless and missed and hit the poor little kitty.

I just saw three brawling homeless people at 57th and 15th rolling around. One of them put their hands into their pants, cupped what appeared to be feces and wiped it in the other ones face while the female homeless person cackled and sat on the ground near the bus stop.
  • Nubbee
Unfortunately it's not just "punk kids." Some "adults" would do this to animals too.

Sometimes these things also happens to pets who get out, who are normally indoor only. We shouldn't be blaming the pet owner. The cat should have never been shot at to begin with.
  • Te
Hmm, and yet people always want to tell me how it's "cruel" to keep their cats indoors.
  • Ep
This just in: Punk kids aren't going anywhere. Shit like this will always happen.
  • Nubbee
That is horrible. Am I the only on who has noticed what seems to be a lot more lost pet signs recently?
  • 50intheclip
has the season already closed for cats?
  • candice.
    Some people are downright disgusting.

    Poor kitty.

    :(
