Investigating the Ballard pizza scene

Posted by Geeky Swedes on December 3rd, 2008

You knew it was only a matter of time before a media company in town did a story on the density of pizza places in Ballard. The Seattle Weekly calls it “comical,” and they gave newcomers Veraci, Via Verde and Picolinos a taste test. (Interestingly, they failed to mention two more places coming to the neighborhood: Zaw Pizza and the soon-to-be-named place coming to 70th Ave.) In the end, the Weekly gave the nod to Veraci as the best of the three.

  • I`m interested there`s a lot of articles on casino gambling. There are dissimilar methods, tactics, strategies, algorithms of counting, calculations and so on.
But these items are only heap of ads and i don`t want to analyze them `cause i don`t have any basic knowledge. It`s ineffective. Estimation i think will be wrong.
Is there anyone here who is interested in such topic?
I`d appreciate someone`s explaining to me is there any systems or strategies, what are they (what approaches or concepts lay in basis) and in which casinos could they be applied to?
    Thanx a lot.

Why is there no mention of Soprano's? I find myself needing a "Soprano's Fix" on a regular basis. The staff is friendly, the service is good and they have a decent selection of wines and brews. They have a web site, do phone orders for pickup and deliver in the Ballard area.

Most importantly, They have great pizza with a wide range of options, plus calzones, grinders, pasta dishes and salads.

Check out their web site: http://sopranospizza.com/

    SNOOSE JUNCTION FOR THIS FAMILY!!!
The comment above about poor quality ingredients is just wrong. And I love that they support local, deliver via bikes and will do well on special requests. I am a picky pizza person. I agree that the pizza doesnt reheat great as ordered, BUT I order it "not stretched completely, light sauce" which results in a slightly thicker, chewy, yummy crust that my child and family love, and it lends itself nicely to reheating. I really like being able to order slices too! I like the people that are there and I think the owner is a decent person who cares about the product he serves, listens openly to requests and is committed to his community. You really can't ask for better. I have tried many many local pizzas, even driving far away, but I find weird doughy crusts, tasteless sauce, funky tiny chopped vegs. No way, give me Snoose Junction. And in the end the best will survive, will not matter how many open. The best will remain....

Need deep dish / Chicago style pizza here badly.

Also, anything like Lou Malnati's would be great.

Snoose and Zeeks for whatever reason give me constant heartburn. Never had that problem at any other place or any other city.
  • Ballard Baby
Snoose has bike delivered many times to our Ballard home and it's never been cold or smashed. It's good good good.

Wallingford Pizza is worth the travel!
  • BlackSheep
Agreed, pizzalover - we need deep dish. Not that Wallingford is far, but I would like to eat in Ballard more often...

I've never had pizza in Ballard as good as the pizza that killed my cardiologist. It had a ring of pork and beef sausages on it that encircled another ring of baconburgers. A single slice weighed nearly a pound. Now, I sit in my condo, crying on the toilet, aching for someone to open a pizza place in my building. There is one across the street and down a block from me, but who am I, Lawrence of Arabia? I can't go travelling willy nilly for my meals every hour! I haven't go the time! I review music for Lifestyles Magazine and it is a full time job, let me tell you. I get hungry all the time and I blame my job for every bite.

I am as God made me, Madam! You cannot judge me as you would a common local business! My fat hangs as a testament to success and plenty.

There is no good pizza in Ballard. I hope people keep trying though! Eventually someone will get it right.

When is Veraci going to open?

Madame K's has GREAT pizza! Love it!
  • candice.
I really like the idea of the bike delivery from Snoose. Until I received a smashed cold pizza.

I'll go in to eat... but never do delivery again.
  • I love Snoose. I love the philosophy of the place, the bike delivery, the local music connection, the decor, the beer ... and the pizza. The pizza -- hell the whole place -- reminds me of the pizza joints I used to love when I was in college on the East Coast. We'll go in, catch a game, have a pitcher and a pizza, and even play pinball every once in a while.

That cheap shot remark about "conveyor built" pizza and cheap ingredients is crap. They hand toss their crusts and I find their toppings -- to sight smell and taste -- to be of an above-average quality and aesthetic. There is nothing corporate about Snoose Junction, which is locally owned and operated and a real asset to Ballard.

I actually really like the pizza at Snoose. Though that being said, I've had some sub-par slices. They're pizza doesn't seem to reheat so well.
  • glo-worm
I've always had really good pizza and pasta from Sopranos....mmm
  • This is one of the many reasons I choose to eat at Snoose. From their website:

We are committed to the local community." We use only independent vendors, who in turn get their products from small farms and businesses themselves. During the construction of Snoose Junction we used as many recycled building materials as was possible. All of the interior wooden doors were salvaged from the Western District Courts Building. And yes, we even got the "Witness Room", and the "Judges Chambers"! The bench seats in the family dining area, were once the bleachers at Roosevelt High School. Our dividing "wall" between the pinball machines and the dining area was originally a bike rack thought to have actually been in front of our very own Snoose Junction. Every eating surface in the entire restaurant has been properly seasoned for nearly 45 years through a strict regimen of impact training at Leilani Lanes. Many thanks to the Re-Store for all above mentioned. The earthquake straps are attached with 105 year old lag bolts, unbelievably, they'd never been used before. The horizontal timbers were the oldest, most beat-up we could find; no telling how old, but we did a lot of work on them. We used insulation from the Environmental Home Store. The interior brick walls are from a train station reportedly somewhere in the South Carolina area. Finally, the Norwegian Flag - well, we found it framed into one of the walls and decided it should stay right here, at home.

That's about it, Thanks for trying us out. We hope to see you again real soon.

Emily, Mark and the rest of us here at Snoose Junction.
  • 70th Ave? I think you mean 70th Street. Unless the unnamed pizza place is on a barge somewhere off Golden Gardens.

Perhaps our pizza density will one day approach Fremont's Thai food density.
  • leavinglasballard
madame k's is damn good. snoose is good if you just want a quick slice and a bucket of sessions. palermo has the tastiest anchovies.
  • Orslax
    Pizza Time RULES!!!

Zeek's is good but going downhill ever since the brand change.

What about Sopranos Pizza in Crown Hill?
  • silence.kit
I'll echo just about all the other comments. My girlfriend and I ate at Via Verde once and that was one time too many. Just bad pizza. Madam K's is actually pretty good, but Veraci's is the best.

If all Ballard had to offer was Madam K's and Veraci's, I'd be a happy man. Ballard needs to focus more on variety. Let's get a Korean restaurant in town already.
  • MIB
Via Verde does have issues with service, decor, etc.
But the margehrita pizza is very very good. I don't know if we'll go back because of the other factors,
but the product out of the kitchen was more then good.

Snoose is about on par with Pizza Hut, Dominos, etc. in my opinion. Cooked on a conveyor built with cheap ingredients..
  • angrignon
Also, the clock is ticking on Via Verde since the day it was opened. Bad location, bad service. Once I was in there with Nina and we saw the owner looking at other pizza restaurant websites and cutting & pasting their descriptions into frontpage on his website.
  • angrignon
There is something about Seattle pizza: Snoose, Palermo and Zeeks both give me massive heartburn while Pagliaccis doesn't. Never had a problem before with the pizza in Chicago.

What does Seattle do thats so unique?
  • MG
    Veraci - YAY!!! YUM!!!
Snooze Junction - Yuk!! Cardboard anyone?
  • Neighbor
Yes, Veraci is the best of this list.

    Is Madame K's still around?
  • glo-worm
Snooze Junction has gotten alot worse this past year. I used to love it but now im barley satisfied :(
I also have to agree with everyone else on Via Verde...nothing special
  • Ballard Baby
everyone seems to be forgetting Snoose Junction...
  • John
    elle --
agreed. via verde is absolutely wretched. it's a meal i'd be willing to pay $5 for – not $25.
  • GB
Hostess: I TOTALLY agree!! Survival of the Fittest.
  • Hostess
What's comical about it? The good ones will survive, the bad ones won't.

What is about enterprise and profit making that Seattleites don't understand?
  • elle
via verde is the WORST restaurant i have ever been to. dont go. i would review it on myballard but they arent listed in the restaurant section...
  • Balltard
I'm a weekly regular (sometimes more) @ Veraci! Love it!
