Statues stolen from Ballard front yards

Posted by Geeky Swedes on February 25th, 2009

In last week’s batch of police reports, we discovered two cases of stolen lawn statues in Ballard. And this week, My Ballard reader sjblackford says someone stole a concrete gargoyle waterspout named “Spewie” (pictured) from the end of their driveway on 8th Ave. “It was attached very securely and ‘permanently,’” she said in an email. “They must have worked really hard at it.” If you have seen Spewie, she asks that you please respond to her forum post.

Hang on, I think I saw Spewie panhandling on Market and then partying it up with some knomes at Matador.
  • Ballard guy
Sorry, he was partying with some gnomes.
  • Ballard Guy
And remember, gnomes are the yuppies of the garden statuary world.

Good luck, I hope you find him before he 'goes condo'.

Check the flea markets outside Seattle this weekend. That's where the stolen patio furniture was showing up.

Are you sure Spewie wasn't partying with some genomes? ;-) Maybe he'll spontaneously replicate and replace himself. (Seriously, I hope you get him back and that the dufuses (dufi?) that took him can find something better to do with their time and energy....like working in a rock quarry.)
  • BlackSheep
Sorry about Spewie. It was so sad that not only was he stolen, but that he was stolen from people loved him enough to give him a name.

Clamster, I believe 'dufi' is correct.

which cross street do you live by
I live on 8th as well and a couple of years ago I had
a lion statue stolen (one of two and the just took the one)
I will keep an eye out if I know where
  • If I thought Spewie had gone off to Party Land, that would be OK. Wouldn't that be something to find him in front of a new condo? Pretty incongruous! I'm on the east side of 8th NW right across from 61st. I'm sorry about your lion. Where are these flea markets where the stolen goods are hawked? I'll go but don't know where they are. We are considering installing Son of Spewie, with stronger cement and more rebar, and keeping video surveillance. Your comments are cheering me up, thanks!

these freaks have stolen so much of my stuff that i quite counting. the topper was when they stole my Buddha from my porch! who would steal a Buddha? sorda of oxy moron if you ask me.

best of luck with your stuff being returned, whoever is doing this has a really cool collection of my stuff too!

    LOSER!

oh yeah, freaking tweeking punks took my Prayer Flags off of my fence they tagged as well! i wonder if they realize that these things do have meaning to people who purchase or make them....

one of these times they seem to "stop by" my home to shop, i am going to be there to talk with them about it with my sweet 2 100 pound dogs as back up support and hopefully they will get the message loud & clear to leave my stuff alone! i work 50 plus hours a week every week, pay taxes, and like to buy stuff that means something to me to accent my home with so i wish they could follow suit and get their own stuff and leave mine alone!

    i hate thieves, i hate thieves....argh!%$@?

I actually was going up 8th early Monday afternoon and noticed "Spewie" by your driveway. It is a huge sculpture and really looked nice where he had been placed. Hope he flies home soon.

We had a lion head planter stolen right off the wall of our house last year around this time up on Phinney Ridge. It had been there for years, and someone just decided to snatch it.

I hope that your guy comes home soon!

    Not very Buddhist of you.
  • clamster
Perhaps "Son of Spewie" can have a motion activated theft deterrent system in which beams of red hot laser light would eminate from his eyes accompanied by MC Hammer's 1990 hit, "You Can't Touch This".
  • BlackSheep
Jules, you really don't want the kind of karma that comes with stealing someone's Buddha.

Face to face with a couple of Rotts sounds just about right!
  • jules
    Joe:
don't judge me and how Buddhist i am until you know me please. cool?......cool.

i hate their behavior, not them as people. is that better judgemental joe?
  • jules
    clamster:
that is really a funny great idea!
  • Joe
What would the Dolly Lama say about 'hate'?
  • BlackSheep
He'd probably say, "I hate it when people call me "Dolly Lama" instead of "Dalai Lama".
  • jules
    good one, blacksheep.
  • Cynthia
Speaking of 'dolly', I had a moving dolly stolen off of my porch a couple of weeks ago.

Decorative items I can understand. But a dolly ??? If they were moving I'd let them borrow it if they asked nicely.

    Sorry about Spewie!
  • West Ballard
    ahhhh....the "joys" of East Ballard?
  • mudblood
Do you think theives take them from our yards to decorate their own? In Ballard? Can you imagine a friend visiting them, noticing their new gargoyle/ buddha/ gnome:

"Nice! Where did you get it?"

"Oh, I stole it from someone's yard the other night. Isn't it great?"

    Uh, yea.
  • JD
trying to think of some "joys" of west Ballard. will get back to you on that
  • Mondo
I like clamster's idea, too. Perhaps modify it with one of those auto-targeting water sprayers that chase the deer away!
  • ringo
Oh no! Don't tell me someone's starting an "East Ballard"/"West Ballard" beef! By the way, I don't live in East Ballard - I live in West Woodland. Insert smiley face.
  • Nordic Woman
    Ringo,
FYI, I have a 1904 hiostory of Fremont ("The Fremont Colleague") that shows the exact parameters of West Woodland. The actual land parcel was from 60th to 65th, and from 3rd to Greenwood. This will make you cry; lots were sold for $50 in 1904!
  • Linda
    Sherry,
walked by your house yesterday and remembered how cool Spewie looked it was if he was guarding the south part of your property
What you might do is keep an eye on Craigs List
I bet whoever took him will list him for big bucks!!
    as cool as he was
  • Ballard Guy
I prefer 'Lower Phinney'. Adds 10% to home values....well used to.
