Scream Barbershop calls it quits in Ballard

Posted by Geeky Swedes on March 1st, 2009

The funky little barbershop on 20th Ave and 55th St. closed today.

They’ve already begun gutting clearing out the interior. A sign on the door directs patrons to Scream’s Capitol Hill location, at the corner of Broadway and Thomas St. (Thanks Josh and Sean for the tip!)

I am so sorry to learn this! I always got a great haircut at Scream. Carrie Ann, if you read this, let us know where you are cutting hair these days!!!!
  • VIKING
GOOD LUCK IN FUNKY CAPITAL HILL!

Now let the Defunking of Ballard continue!!!
  • bmvaughn
I hope that Golden City takes over the space!
  • MJ
did the homeless and drug addicts ruin the area?
  • gcm
damn that was the place i liked to get my hair cut.
  • Nordic Woman
In fact I heard that the drunks and junkies from Golden City did in fact make them pack up and leave.

When are we going to take back our neighborhood?
  • js
well, its agood thing for them that there are no drunks or junkies on Capitol hill.
  • scrumbum

I get my hair cut here more than occasionally and was told by employees that the landlord didn't offer them an attractive lease extension even though one was given to Golden City, it didn't have anything to do with the GC clientele. They've been going month to month for some time and will look for another Ballard location in the future.
  • Black Helicopter Operations
I was told the exact same thing directly. They were tired of the Golden City Junkies hanging around outside the door. That is the reality. Not your version. Sorry
  • Ballard Guy
Not enough hipsters and Emos in Ballard?
  • soundelf
I'm sorry to see Scream go, but I'd like to highly recommend VAIN salon at 22nd and Ballard Ave. Decent prices, edgy cuts, very talented stylists and well-run organization active in community and charitable projects. If you want specifics, check out their yelp reviews (4 1/2 stars out of 126 reviews). Note, the Ballard location is new, their flagship location being in Belltown.
  • Andy
All I know of Scream is that my one haircut there sucked, and that my "barber" had never heard of Brylcreem. If it was Golden City that drove them out, that's just one more reason to like Golden City.
  • tom
They had the worst location in Ballard, near the drug alley, by the nuisance bar, near the dead copy shop. Good luck in your new location.

    Aaand Ballard wraps it up.
  • bmvaughn
I too heard from the owner of Golden City that the landlord did not give them an attractive deal and that he was given one. Don't think this has to do with anything but $$ folks.
  • Goofy Norwegian
Isn't all of this "change" fun to witness? I just wonder how much longer that entire building, and many more for that matter, is going to be demolsihed. The ground is worth more than the business on it. Simple facts. Did anybody expect All the Kings to be there "forever"? It aint my grandmas Ballard any longer kiddies.
  • Ballard Guy
Change? I'm sorry, were little old Scando ladies going to SCREAM for a cut and a blue rinse? I didn't realize SCREAM had such a long history in Ballard catering to your grandma.

Was SCREAM the one that pioneered the fisherman's $5 bowl cut?
  • Zippy
Oh please Goofy, did your Grandma hang out at GC and do meth in the alley?

If Scream left because of GC and junkies, that's a shame for Ballard. If change in Ballard involves driving out deadbeats who don't care a rat's arse about the community then good riddance.

We need more change and more development.
  • MaryWit
Will the last one out of Ballard please turn out the lights?
  • JD
Who is leaving Ballard? Have you paid attention to the endless openings of restaurants?

What has left us? A tux shop, a flag store, an antique shop, and a barber shop?

We've gained 3 sushi restaurants, a dozen or two (ha) pizza joints, niche shops, LA Fitness, Chipotle, and Trader Joe's.

Would the last "debbie downer" out of Ballard leave the lights on for the rest of us?
  • iloveseatown
    JD,

Not all of us want to live in a Bellevue clone, which Ballard is quickly becoming.

I have given up on caring anymore and I'll just search for a new place to hang my hat soon. If I wanted to live around 100's of chain stores I could do that for a lot cheaper in Kansas.
  • BallardDINK
I got some good, cheap cuts at Scream; the barbers were cool. But yeah, parking my car directly outside their storefront--which was next to the Golden Shitty's storefront, with it's accretion of drunks--was not a good idea. Sorry to see them go.
  • milo dakkat
Anybody have any recommendations for a good place to get a cut/style for under $50 in Ballard? Something that looks good on a 40 y.o. who's not a fashion victim.

"Scream" is what I want to do after most of the crappy cuts I've gotten lately. Please, there's gotta be something better than Rudy's or Habitude.
  • silence.kit
Nordic Woman, I believe you to be insane.
  • Hairdo
I've had great haircuts at Tart, in the old Kress Building. Elizabeth's cuts are $35 - a great deal. I've also heard good reviews of Baba Louise, which is on 65th near 8th.
  • gooner
iloveseatown. one thing that ballard is not, is full of chain stores. while i agree that there may be a risk of that happening i would guestimate that we are over 90% local. in fact, other than rudy's, i can't think of a single chain store on all of ballard ave. (i am sure someone on here will prove me wrong).

with the exception of the new ballard blocks, i can only think of starbucks, tully's, subway, a few tanning places, walgreens/bartells and a bank or two that qualify as chain. Rudy's is a boderline chain store, but it started locally so i guess it won't be to some. compare those numbers to the 50-70 other local shops and restaurant, that is pretty impressive if you ask me.
  • Black Helicopter Operations
Of course the owner of Golden City told you it had to do with mony. Why the heck would he say "Oh well, they just got tired of the meth heads and my customers puking in the gutter outside the store. If that location is worth renting at ANY price, be my guest. There is no business that could survive next to Golden City, aside from a Liquor store or adult book shop. Why the cops refuse to police Ballard is beyond me.
  • gcm
for national chains, we've got also got radio shack, at&t wireless store, fed ex kinkos, local chains include azteca's, than brothers, great harvest, prolly forgetting others...
  • angelatini
You know, as far as police presence go...just a note, I constantly read that there isn't much response from them around Ballard. I don't have much personal experience.
Last night my neighbor came downstairs to ask us if we had heard 2 bloodcurdling screams. We hadn't, but he advised he had called the police. In the time I went outside to have a cigarette there was a patrol car on our street. I just thought it was pretty impressive, considering what I read here all the time.
  • angelatini
    go=goes
  • Nordic Woman
you think I'm insane? The owners of Ballard Camera on the corner are sick of junkies living on their ROOF. They go up there and have to clean up the needles. And there is a fence up there!

I've seen plenty of drug deals go on in front of Golden City.

Half of the City of Seattle's income comes from Sales tax. It's a simple thing to see that junkies drive away business. Businesses fold= less money for the city. Less money = less social services. It's a downward spiral.
  • Sharon
As for cheap (ish) decent haircuts, try Babalouise on 65th towards 8th. It's a bit west of the Tin Hat and Molly Maguires.

I've gotten a few cuts there and have yet to be disappointed. Also it's a nice middle of the road vibe, not to "hip" like Vain or Rudy's and not fancy shmancy, either.
  • Sharon
That should say not "too" hip. I really wish there was an edit button...I get a bit of itchy trigger finger now and then.
  • Dave
I walked by SCREAM all the time and never saw anyone that made me feel uncomfortable. But I also never got a haircut there. As for ALL THE KINGS, I never bought a flag but I will truly miss seeing the kitty everytime I pass.
  • RebA
When I was employed I went to see Tia at Source (on leary).. but she is out of your price range. I think they have other stylists there that are in the 40-50$ range. And Source's yelp reviews are all stellar.

    Tax the drugs!

    Goodbye I love Sea Town

you love Sea Town SOOOO much, but you announce you are ready to "hang your hat" elsewhere as soon as Scream Barber shop closes?

Sorry you have given up caring. That's a bold statement.

And for the record, I don't get the Bellevue and Ballard comparison.

Good luck finding a neighborhood with no chains, no crime, no drugs, and one that exhibits everything you love about Sea Town.
  • Vacant Bowler
As for police presence, isn't there typically a patrol unit (or two) that hangs out behind the library by the loading dock?

Although, I guess one can't always rely on that since I see more disturbances outside the library (among the crowd that gathers before opening time) then I do at the Golden City...
  • Chop-Chop!
Angelos on 5331 Tallman Ave NW
    his haircuts are ALWAYS $25
He is fun and easy to have a conversation with.
  • scrumbum
Nordic Woman (and your paranoid alter ego),
I was merely sharing what employees of Scream told me personally - that it had to do with a poor lease arrangement and uncertainty whether they would be able to continue to do business in the location due to the lease terms offered by the building owner. I suppose they could have been lying to me, but why would they?
  • Chop-Chop!
I doubt nordic woman gets her hair cut at SCREAM so, OF COURSE she knows the full story....
  • silence.kit
    Scrumbum,

NO WAY! IT WAS THE HOMELESS JUNKIES! AND DRUNKS!!!...!!!
  • Madison
I forgot about Angelo's. Very nice guy.

But it's kind of a drag that there's little free parking in that area now, and any free spots get snapped up right quick.
  • d.baker
I have to defend the Golden City realllly quick.

I really like that place and no, I'm not a druggie. In fact, I rarely even drink. That being said, this is one of the few places I've gone and haven't been treated like absolute crap by the bartender or the other customers just because I'm not a trendy yuppie. Its nice to go someplace where people aren't always giving you that "I'm sooo much better than you!" look, if that means I have to hang out with the "harder" crowd, so be it, they have never bothered nor hurt me. Long live the Golden City!
  • pgreyy
When I lived on Capitol Hill, I went to the Scream on Capitol Hill...and, luckily for me, when I moved to Ballard my favorite stylist just happened to move to the Scream in Ballard.

So...this sucks for me as I'm unlikely to move back to Capitol Hill any time soon.
  • m
@ d.baker - you've been drinking in the wrong places. Try the Smoke Shop - seriously!
  • milo dakkat
Thanks for the hair recommendations. I now have a nice list of places to try. But hooray for Haven! They won the "I gotta get my hair cut RIGHT NOW!" contest and I got a fabulous new spring hair do. Woo-hoo!
  • Maria
I have never been into Golden City but I love their Orange Beef and have it delivered often.
  • SPG
I don't know what it is about Seattle, or maybe it's just my luck, but it is hard to get a good haircut around here. Whenever I travel I get a haircut now. NYC, Switzerland, Paris, Japan, Korea, always a great cut and a good way to meet the locals. My former employer thought it was odd that I would come BACK from trips with a new haircut, but the worst I ever got was an ok haircut in NYC.
Any other good recommendations for haircuts in Seattle?
  • Maria
SPG Seattle is not exactly a fashion Mecca. It stands to reason that a city that considers North Face and bike shorts fashion will not have a plethora of quality salons. Seattle has a lot to offer, but fashion here is a bit generic.
  • Joel
I love the Golden City, too. And the Smoke Shop! And I liked Scream- got my hair cut there the last three years or so. Have to admit, though, I did feel a tiny bit out of place.

Geez, people, lighten up on the G.C.! Lunch there (and the orange beef) is not too bad!
  • Squib
    This totally sucks. PHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
