Get Leary Ave for just 5 bucks

Posted by Geeky Swedes on September 2nd, 2009

OK, Leary Ave NW itself isn’t for sale, but an old street sign in “below average” condition could be yours for just $5. The city is selling hundreds of old Seattle street signs that are being replaced due to damage or wear. If a main thoroughfare isn’t your cup of tea, how about a side street like Dibble Ave or Jones Ave? The entire list of street signs that are for sale can be found here.

Street signs can be purchased at the City’s Surplus Warehouse, located at 3807 2nd Ave S. Some of the historical or novelty signs may also be posted on EBay, the city says, so go get yours quick. Contact the warehouse with questions or for information on how to purchase an old street sign at (206) 684-0827. (Thanks CentralDistrictNews.com for tracking this down!)

I had no idea there was such a place. And like NoraBell said, I have no idea what I'd do with a sign, but I'd like to get one of my numbered street (74th). I'm off work tomorrow (9/4) so I'm going to take a gander. If anyone has a request, I'd be happy to check. Let me know.

I went down there at 11:00 this morning. They were going quickly. I saw about 50 purchased in the 15 minutes that I was there. They also have computers, file cabinets, desks and other office stuff for sale.

Wow. Any laptops or just desktops?
Ah, I can just get my lazy self down there to see for myself too.
  • Hey, I've got an idea. Does anybody who wants one of these think they can make it down there during the hours this place is open? I'd happily give that person money to pick one up for me and toss in a thank-you beer!

Nice idea LovrienS. And thanks for the info gumba. I was going to post here asking about the numbered signs. I wouldn't mind having one of my street. This is my first house that I own. So a sign would make a nice momento for since I do expect to one day move to a 2nd home.
  • Thanks for the info, gumba. Too bad about the hours -- I don't see myself ever getting all the way down there in the middle of a workday.

I think this is a great idea. I called the warehouse. They're open 11-3:30, M-F and you can't reserve a sign over the phone - have to go in. they do have some numbered signs, but haven't listed them yet (not sure if they will). More are coming in all the time as the signs get replaced.

No idea what I'd do with a street sign but it's still tempting.

I'm thinking that if I grab a couple of them, I can do a cool faux street corner design in my garden/patio using a bit of spare trim/scrap metal rod. It just seems like a fun way to decorate with a bit of Seattle nostalgia!

    Cute idea!
