Bop Street Records moving to Market Street

There’s a moving sale going on at Bop Street Records (5219 Ballard Ave NW) as owner Dave Vorhees prepares for a short move to the former Tableau space at 2220 NW Market St.

Bop Street has been a Ballard institution since 1984 and has been in the Ballard Ave location since 2001. “I’m looking forward to being moved,” Vorhees laughs, “But I’m not looking forward to the move itself.” To make the move easier, Vorhees has marked down everything in the store through the end of May with the majority of the records in the basement marked at $3.

The last day for Bop Street on Ballard Ave is June 30th. Vorhees hopes to have the grand opening at the new location on July 1. “I think it’s going to be fantastic,” Vorhees says about the new location, “I think I’ll have a lot more people coming in.”

Vorhees drying off records after the basement of his current location flooded.

Vorhees says this move has absolutely nothing to do with the flood that damaged some of his collection last year. (Thanks Caryn for the tip!)

  1. I've always thought that Dave's record store on Ballard Ave looked more like a bunker or a wholesale operation not open to the public, so hopefully he'll get more people to come in with an inviting storefront that actually has windows.
    Good Luck!
The next question is what business can replace him without a major remodel?

  2. Wow! Second move in less than 10 years. I remember when he moved out of the small space there next to the Golden Country Chinese restaurant.

  3. he is going to have to get rid of A LOT of records to fit into that new space. i will personally help him do that though!

best of luck to you Dave. great guy, great store.

  4. I collect/buy a lot of records. This is the strangest purchasing experience in the industry. Part of me wants to really support this store. Anything desirable is about double the price you should be paying for it. In addition, it appears everything is missing a current price tag. Sometimes it feels like you are being charged based on your level interest in a certain piece.
