Ballard Best BBQ to be replaced by Paraty

Another business has applied for a liquor license at 5463 Leary Ave NW – the former location of Chai House and the short-lived Ballard’s Best BBQ.

The yellow application submitted by Paraty, Inc for a new restaurant called Paraty was posted on Saturday to sell spirits/beer/wine in a restaurant lounge setting.

Emily emailed us, “We were nosing around Ballard this afternoon and noticed there were some items for sale inside the building that used to house Ballard Best BBQ. We went inside–items for sale include plates, coffee cups, vases, etc.—and spoke with a man who says he’s applied for a liquor license for the space. He’s planning to open a restaurant that serves Brazilian seafood and has a bar. Hopes to open it in about a month.”

  1. Had to look it up:
Paraty (or Parati) [pronounced Par-a-CHEE] is a preserved Portuguese colonial (1500-1822) and Brazilian Imperial (1822–1889) town with a population of about 36,000.
It is located on the Costa Verde (Green Coast), a lush, green corridor that runs along the coastline of the state of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil. Paraty has become a popular tourist area in recent years, renowned for the historic town and the coast and mountains in the region.

  2. I miss the Crack House too.

The finding little plastic baggies tightly wrapped in between the cushions in the seats. The guy with the shakes leaning up against the wall near the bathroom. That girl who wouldn’t stop scratching herself obsessively near the window, always looking outside for someone. The crowd in front who would accost anyone walking by. Oh yeah, rock on Chai House.

  3. I miss the Chai House as well, went there a lot even when it was at it’s previous location on Market. Never saw any negative BS people are here chime in about. It had character atleast.

  4. I think soon we’ll be floating down a whiskey river through Ballard to a great lake of beer, fishing for natural organic free trade gastropub fare. BUT WHAT WILL WE DO WITH ALL THE BIKES?!

  5. I made a trip down to Paraty back in 1997. Fantastic place. Wonderful sailing around the islands, and knocking back Cachaça. Let’s hope they bring some with them!

It would be really interesting if they do a more seafood oriented Brazilian fare… different to the regular Churrascos you get elsewhere. Fancy me some Rabo-de-galo and Caldeirada.
