Sculpture removed from Carkeek exhibit

The third annual Heaven and Earth outdoor sculpture exhibit is currently underway at Carkeek Park – minus sculpture number eight by Brian Gerich.

According to Ray Freeman with the Center for Contemporary Art, who coordinates this exhibit, “The piece in question was removed without prior notification of CoCA or the artist by a Seattle Parks Department employee on September 2, because he felt that the cables supporting it might be damaging one of the trees,” Freeman writes in an email. “It was destroyed in the removal process. Both CoCA and the artist are heartbroken over this incident and the breakdown in communication that it represents.”

The rest of the Heaven and Earth display will be in the park until October 9th. More information and a map of sculptures can be found here. (Thank you Carrie for the tip!)
