Prepare for a Viking invasion: Viking Days are this weekend

It’s time for a Viking takeover; this weekend is Viking Days at the Nordic Heritage Museum in Ballard. The free event on August 17 and 18 will have Nordic entertainment, food, activities, and a plethora of Vikings.

On both days, a traditional Swedish pancake breakfast will kick off the festivities, and on Saturday, there will be an alder-smoked salmon barbecue from 4:30 to 7 p.m. There will be food from each of the five Nordic countries available all weekend, including the following: Swedish meatballs, Norwegian lefse, Danish aebleskiver, Finnishvoileipä (open-faced sandwiches), and Icelandic sweets like vinarterta, a delicious layer cake, according to the organizers. There will also be an outdoor Valhalla Beer Garden with grilled sausages and beer from Carlsberg and Odin Brewing Company.

In addition to the food, Viking Days will feature a Viking Encampment, which will show what life as a Viking was really like, including cooking, weaving, wood-carving and interactive game demonstrations. There will be music all weekend, local merchants selling Nordic goods, and craft projects for kids.

Learn more about the festival on the Nordic Heritage Museum’s website.
