City buys Baker Park expansion lot

In a triumph for local residents, the City of Seattle has settled with a developer who had plans to buy the lot directly south of the Baker Park. The city managed to secure the land and will be removing the house that currently stands on the lot, with plans to expand the current Baker Park.

Brad Wakeman of the Whittier Heights Community Council wrote to tell us of the news, and says they plan to have some community meetings soon to discuss plans for how to develop the new park. “It will be a several-year process, but there will be lots of steps to get there and lots of opportunities for community engagement.” He also says the settlement wouldn’t have been possible without the community support and outreach. “A big THANK YOU to all who called and wrote emails and persistently let the Parks Department and the city know how important this was to us,” Wakeman writes.

We’ll keep you updated on any community meetings regarding the expansion.
