No deal yet: city to offer all-day camps if strike delays first day of school

The first day of school could be delayed if teachers go on strike tomorrow, so the city is offering all-day camps at community centers. Ballard Community Center is one of those 16 designated centers, and children aged 5 to 12 who are already enrolled in the Parks and Recreation before- and after-school program are eligible to attend at no extra cost.

As of this morning a deal between the union and the school district has still not been made, according to King 5. Both sides reported progress in negotiations, but are stuck over teacher salary.

The community centers will provide the extra day care on September 9, 10, and 11, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parents whose children are not yet enrolled can do so via phone or at their home community centers. Registration is first-come, first-served, and all before- and after-school program registration paperwork must be completed to be eligible, according to the city.

Children who attend are asked to bring a sack lunch, and parents should drop their enrolled children off by 9 a.m., otherwise they’ll activate the waiting list. They say there will be a 1:15 ratio of child to staff during the program.
