Maritime Poetry and Stories Slam set for May 10 at Fishermen’s Terminal

With a full field of 15 storytellers from Oregon to Canada, the 10th Annual Stories of the Sea will be a raucous night dedicated to song, poetry and storytelling about the epic adventures of commercial fishing and the maritime industry and knot a night to be missed!

The annual Seattle Maritime Festival Stories of the Sea is set for 7-10 p.m. on Thursday, May 10, at the Highliner Public House at Fishermen’s Terminal! There is no cost to attend.

Stories of the Sea kicks off the annual Harley Marine Seattle Maritime Festival, which also includes a walking tour of Fishermen’s Terminal on Friday, May 11, and free Family Fun Day filled with a cargo ship of fun activities on Saturday, May 12, at the Seattle Maritime Academy in Ballard.

“Stories of the Sea is a terrific opportunity to bring our community together during the Harley Marine Seattle Maritime Festival to showcase the epic heritage of the fishing industry,” said Susan Chesney, President of the Seattle Propeller Club and National Sales Manager for National Fisherman magazine.

Each performer will have 10 minutes to perform. Each story (spoken word or song) by an artist during a performance will be judged individually and artists can win multiple cash prizes based on their performance. Performers will be judged based on if it is an Original Story, Creativity, Presentation & Stage Presence, Imagery, Poetic/literary Content, If You Have Worked in the Maritime Industry, and Nautical Relevance. Representatives of the maritime industry will judge the performers

A total of $600 in prizes will be awarded in eight categories:

First Place – Spoken Word Story: $150
First Place – Story Song: $100
Second Place – Spoken Word Story: $100
Second Place – Story Song: $50
Third Place Spoken Word Story: $50
Third Place – Story Song: $25
Best Overall Presentation/Stage Presence: $100
Honorable Mention: $25

Stories of the Sea is sponsored by the Harley Marine Services, the Seattle Propeller Club, Port of Seattle, Pacific Marine Expo, and National Fisherman magazine, always attracts a packed house.

Stories of the Sea kicks off the Harley Marine Seattle Maritime Festival.

There will be a free walking tour of Fishermen’s Terminal led by Port of Seattle staff from 10 – 11:30 a.m. on Friday, May 11. The tour is limited to 40 people and registration is required – portrsvp@portseattle.org, and specify Fishermen’s Terminal Tour.

This year’s Harley Marine Seattle Maritime Festival’s Family Fun Day will be held on Saturday, May 12, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Seattle Maritime Academy, 4455 Shilshole Ave NW – just east of the Ballard Bridge.

The Family Fun Day features three free Argosy tours of the ship canal, a wide variety of Experience Maritime activities, displays, music and food trucks. The Experience Maritime activities offer tons of cool hands-on programs including kids boat building, welding, oceanography, emergency signals/flares, Coast Guard damage control trailer, life raft and boat tours, line tossing, survival suit races and other family activities. A crowd-pleasing highlight will be the chance for the public to pilot a tugboat at the Academy’s bridge simulator. There is no admission fee to Family Fun Day.
