To all you Scandanavians out there, Happy Lucia Day — a day to remember St. Lucia (also known as St. Lucy), the Queen of Lights. For generations Swedes have honored the young Christian martyr who legend says lived a very rough life. Today, Swedish communities each have a Lucia Bride to represent the saint. The bride dresses in a white gown with a red sash and a crown of candles on her head. In the Swedish church that I attended as a teenager, I remember this day as being a really big day. We had a giant feast, and then the oldest single girl would dress as the Lucia Bride. It was a lot of fun, and I have fond memories of Lucia Day. To add some Scandinavian tradition into your holidays, you can throw your own Lucia Day party this weekend.
