City may ban bonfires at Golden Gardens

Seattle Parks & Rec is proposing a ban on the summer tradition of lounging around the bonfire at Golden Gardens park and Alki in 2009. This year, they’d like to reduce the number of fire pits at Golden Gardens from 12 to seven. The Seattle PI writes that this is the second time in the past few years that the city has tried to ban fires for environmental reasons. The 2004 attempt was quashed by petition. In a memo to the park board released Thursday, “The overall policy question for the Board is whether it is good policy for Seattle Parks to continue public beach fires when the carbon … emissions produced by thousands of beach fires per year contributes to global warming.” One MyBallard reader wrote us wondering what the community feels about this.
