Port candidates talk cruise ships, viaduct and more

Four candidates vying for two non-partisan positions of Port Commissioner spoke to a few dozen citizens last night during a candidate forum.

(Left to right: Kenyon Foxworthy in for Max Vekich, David Doud, Tom Albro and Rob Holland).

The discussion centered around cruise ships at Pier 91, the viaduct and its proposed deep-bore tunnel replacement and airplane traffic noise, something Magnolia residents say is increasing. QueenAnneView has a complete write-up.

  1. Very cool graphic in that article. From the flight paths, it looks like Ballard gets as many fly-overs as Magnolia. I don't have a problem with the noise and I've never heard anyone else around here complain.

Let's see, we live in JET CITY. Get real folks or move to Montana.

  2. are you kidding? we get TONS of airplane noise around here.
I can't look up in the sky without seeing two or three of those stupid little float planes. Glad my peace and quiet is disturbed by some jerk from Medina flying to his little private island.

Jet city? I thought boeing already moved to chicago or carolina.

glad to hear some folks don't mind these flying lawnmowers, but I think they SUCK.

  3. My castrated cat is less jumpy to the sound of planes than you. This is the Pac NW…..I love seeing the floatplanes, reminds me of what a unique place we live.

  4. I noticed an uptick in incoming flights, but only the few really large, low noisy ones that fly over between 5 and 6 am.

Not all of us are in the fp of the sea planes, jeffo. But that's not what the article I linked to was about.

  5. Well yes, Boeing moved their HQ to Chicago, but much of their assembly is still local.

Are you really that bothered by the float planes? Then why do you live in the most densely populated area in a six state region?

  6. I believe those floatplanes are mostly Kenmore Air, and flying to Victoria and the San Juans. Yes, even you could fly on them if you cared to. Personally, I think they kick a$$.

  7. “that's not what the article I linked to was about.”
I realize that stb, but someone else claimed no one has ever complained about airplane noise. I was doing that.

“Then why do you live in the most densely populated area in a six state region?”
it's called a job. got one?

“Noise is part of living in a big city.”
garbage trucks, busses, fedex & ups trucks. these I do not mind. these noises are the cost of business and productivity.

float planes are luxury/recreational craft. people going on vacation. and they bug the hell out of me. do you people also like the buzz of jet skis because they remind you that you live near water? do you really need a loud noise to remind you of the beautiful place you live?

why can't they make them electric like my prius so I don't have to hear the damn things?

  8. Ahhhh, so it's the fact that people with more money than you use them that annoys you. Well, if that's the case, great.

FYI plenty of people use float planes to fly places for work.

  9. The floatplanes have been flying over our skyline for more than 60 years. They are an icon in the Pacific Northwest and make our area unique.

How long have you lived here?

And yes, thankfully I have a job.

  10. “Ahhhh, so it's the fact that people with more money than you use them that annoys you. “

no, actually I do quite well thankyou. I just have no inclination to annoy people in the process of increasing my carbon footprint five-fold. what's the matter, ferries too slow for you?

“How long have you lived here?”

I've lived in Ballard over twenty years. how is this relevant?
and since I've lived here, floatplane traffic has increased dramatically.

just because something has been around for 60 years means I can't complain about it?

“The pilot's not on vacation … he's working, too, just like you.”

well maybe then I need to find a job that makes lots of noise and bothers people too. poor argument.
