At one o’clock Saturday morning several eggs were thrown at Julia Kuskin’s house on 27th Ave NW, breaking this front window.
She emailed us this photo and says, “The cops came but, really, there’s nothing to be done. They said they haven’t heard of any eggings in six or so months. We have a feeling that it was just a bunch of teenagers as I saw some kids walking quickly down the street later and thought I saw them looking back at the house.”

horrible!!! get these punks to replace the window!
btw, around which cross-street did this atrocity take place? worse than tagging imho.
Haha. Time to replace the window anyway, new glass wouldn't break like that.
yes, cross street please.
yes, new (double-paned) glass wouldn't have broken.
I'm sure these kids just wanted to make an inexpensive mess, but replacing a window that big can be pretty pricey. The homeowner should've been able to do this at their own leisure, rather than this punk prompting.
now then, what was that cross-street?
Whatever, thats a $20 piece of glass. Not very hard to replace it yourself.
Easy to be replaced if you know how. There are plenty of smart well-educated people around here who don't know how to replace glass in a window so it ends up being pricey to hire someone to do it.
Double-pane windows are a great idea if you can afford them.
I'm sorry this happened. What a pain in the butt. Not to mention an extra expense that no one needs to have suddenly thrust upon them.
$20? what planet do you live on?
maybe 20 bucks for 3/16″ plate glass from home depot.
and 20 more dollars for nail sets, putty, etc.
why don't you go over there and help her gmer, since you find it so easy?
my guess is she'll pay a glazing contractor $200-$300 to do this right.
glad you find that so amusing.
Julia–How awful. Sorry this happened. It must have been very startling.
Well educated and “smart” are certainly not synonymous. I've met smarter guys on the jobsite than in the lecture hall.
Could we get the cross street please? And if it hasn't been fixed yet, let us know what times during the day you aren't home.
Though I get the jab at the Crab, don't be a creep by planting the seed.
I say death penalty. Who's with me?
We're with you, Mr. The Kid.
I believe I was guilty of this kind of behavior as a kid. Just be grateful the kids are just out throwing eggs; in some hoods it's bullets.
I also did this same type of thing as a kid.
In fact, I remember throwing eggs at a big picture window of someone's house just like this. The eggs never broke windows though.
so which is it–cheap ballard glass? or tough ballard chickens laying rocks for eggs?
I guess I'm missing the humor in the situation, please fill us in.
the cross street is 65th.
Sorry to hear this happened, sure puts a damper on the weekend.
gmer is probably one of the perps and if not is certainly a troll (and an a**hat)!
Are there teenagers living at this location?
Egg update!!!!!!!!!!
Broken egg spotted on sidewalk, South side of 65th st just East of 24th, GPS location (just kidding). Evidently these Eggsters are not just singling out one target.
I can only hope they chose eggs because they do not usually cause permanent damage and were maybe shocked when they broke a window.
I recently had a single pane of glass replaced (38″x24″) at the cost of $194.00. Not from eggs but neighbors weed whacker.
Al's glass in Shoreline did an excellent job!
The cops will have to start searching local kids for unlicensed, concealed eggs, before they do another drive-by in da' hood.
Can you imagine a little kid getting Ballard kid getting caught in the crossfire? I wouldn't be able to eat an omelette again….
I wonder if they were members of Phinney's notorious CH12 gang (“CartĂ³n del Huevo Doce”).
You see them hanging outside Ken's some evenings, pounding Redbulls and helping old ladies across the street. Pretty nasty bunch of guys, you wouldn't want to mess with them in honors Spanish class.
“eggs … do not usually cause permanent damage” isn't true. I've seen egg yolk cause permanent damage to exterior paint.
I wonder if gmer knows anything about who did this. Seems to have the same sense of humor as people who would do something like this?
Seems to me *anyone* might look back at a house with a broken window, particularly if it was a nice respectable-looking place (and therefore the broken window was all the more unexpected a sight). I wouldn't assume it was necessarily that lot of kids.
I can't believe people think this is funny! This is not funny, people. Why is this funny?
As another way to get rid of these eggs, it seems the youth have too many of and don't want. Why not take them to the Food Bank?
Mean-spirited egg throwers. Some Ballard folks “paint a pretty picture” of this part of town and “make light” of the stuff that goes down here. In actuality, Ballard can be a pretty dark scene. It's not the place the real estate agents and townhome developers are selling…Stop drinking the Kool Aid..
I'll have to remember if something bad happens to me not to let myballard.com know so that it's not posted on the site for some people to use as a forum to be jerks using my bad experience as their jumping board. Sorry you had a bad experience, Julia and sorry some people have to be jerks whenever someone does have a bad experience. :(
$20? Do you live in 1949?
So-Crates!
Horrible, Julia – so sorry this happened to you. I would have been peeved beyond words. Your home should feel safe and secure, and this kind of thing can take away some of that. Hope you can get it replaced quickly and that you don't let it get you down.
Btw, eggs are expensive – who has money to throw away these days?
Sorry, Julia, not just for the damage to your window, but for the 'egging' from some of these supposed grown-ups here in the comments.
Has anyone offered their skills in getting your window fixed?
Perhaps some of these folks who engaged in similar behavior in their youth could pay a bit of pennance for that now?
Anyhow, it just sad on both counts.
Have you had it repaired? Need help?
Definately a huge problem. When a thug broke into my home a few years ago I simply went to the hardware store at 80th + 15th NW. There are also many small independent glass shops around that'll be happy to cut a piece of glass, single or double strength. Ya need some points and some putty along with patience. It's also good to prime the raw wood with some quick drying primer too. The glass isn't that much. Around say $30 last time! This, unfortunately, is good experience for any homeowner to gain. Unlike plumbing or electricity, which are things to leave to a pro, always.
Random crime like this is pretty rare.
Does the victim in this case have any children? Perhaps the individuals did this as an act against one of their children.
If you really want to find out who did it, hit up the local convenience stores and grocery stores and ask them for surveillance video of people buying eggs. Chances are the kids were there earlier (that's how friends of mine got caught when I was younger).
“hit up the local convenience stores and grocery stores and ask them for surveillance video of people buying eggs”
Great idea. It'd be like 'The First 48', but for Ballard….and with eggs.
hey as a glazier , Do you know that NEW glass would break like that unless it was Laminated or toughened. But with your childish haha I guess your another clued up teenager who know the world owes you everythin..
ALL those that laugh at the $20 quote TAKE THIS FACT for those in the trade toughtened 6mm glass is $6:46 a sq Metre !!
And it is quite easy to replace glass if extra care is taken and have a little know how.
So this is news? We should all be relieved it is just eggs and not someone having their house busted into and robbed at gunpoint, which has been more the norm around here.
What a bonus for these kids! I'm sure all they expected to get was the satisfaction of having ruined someone's day. But, now, in addition, they get dozens of people talking about their escapades on a community blog!
I did some toilet papering as a kid, a few times. I'm not proud of it. But I can guarantee I'd have done a lot more if it got written up in some kind of community forum every time I did it! What instant gratification!
Pretty callous attitude for a neighbor “gmer”. How about the time and gas it'll take to do the job? I remember the first time I tried to replace a broken window and measured wrong. Took twice as long and cut my hand. Put your money where your mouth is. Get up off the computer and go over and fix her window or think twice about leaving sarcastic comments like this.
By the way “fiddler”, double pane glass is about a half inch thick and may not fit her frame.
I used to do this kind of stuff. We threw potatoes at cars. We broke a window like this one night, dang I hope nobody got hurt. I was like 18 or 19 over 20 years ago. Stupid, but thats what young people do. I guess if somebody got hurt it would of made the news?
