Empty Bowls painting party Saturday

Grab your paintbrushes! The 2nd annual Empty Bowls fundraiser is just around the corner and organizers are looking for artists to help paint the bowls.

The painting party is Saturday at the Ballard Community Center (6020 28th Ave NW) from noon until 4 p.m. You don’t need to be a master painter to come, in fact organizers invite everyone from the community to come decorate the bowls. Later next month, the finished bowls will be up for grabs for a minimum suggested donation of $10. (Anything over $10 is tax deductible and available for matching funds from employers.) Plus there will be a silent auction for premium bowls donated by renowned artists such as Kri Kri Studios. (Sneak peek of some finished bowls for the 2010 fundraiser below.)

Empty Bowls is an international effort to fight hunger, executed at the community level. Money raised here in Ballard will go to the Ballard Food Bank. Unique to Seattle Empty Bowls is the sale of animal bowls. Money from these bowls will go to the Seattle Animal Shelter to buy food for hungry animals.

The fundraiser will be held on February 27th at the Ballard Community Center from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. When you buy a bowl, Ballard Market has donated meat and vegan soup to fill it and Tall Grass Bakery will provide the bread. Local musicians will be providing the entertainment.

Last year, the fundraiser brought in more than $5,000 for charity. This year organizers want to double that.

  1. We are absolutely not expecting fancy, complicated things from our artists! Personally, the simpler ones are my favorite. You can just dip a bowl in a glaze or two and call it good! I dipped the pale blue one and the white one with the decorative cut out edge last year and I love the simplicity of them.

We'll have photos of bowls from last year and artists there to answer questions and offer inspiration. Our youngest artist will be 1yo! If she can do it, so can you!

  2. The vegan soup is a lentil soup we served last year that went over very well. The other will be a popular hearty chicken noodle soup. I think we vetted the Vegan soup pretty well last year, but I can ask for an ingredients list and double check!

  3. Very cool. I'll be there then. I was just thinking they expected art, but if all that's expected is a cute kitty cat face I'm up to the challenge.

  4. We do expect art, and it's all in the eyes of the beholder!

We had an elementary class paint some bowls, and many of them had a great abstract quality to them that many people liked.

So, no pressure for Michelangelo style beauty, crazy abstract Pollock is just fine!

  5. If you're interested in volunteering to paint bowls do you need to be there at noon or is it okay to come some time between noon and 4?

  6. Feel free to come any time between noon and say, three so that you have time to paint a bowl before we have to start packing up at 4:00 for the next event in there that evening.

  7. Not at all! We're grateful for all the help we can get!

We've had so many people donate some really wonderful unfinished bowls, we now need to get them decorated so they're ready to sell!

  8. Thanks to all the MyBallard Folks who made it out to paint bowls for us! We had 240 bowls and got them all painted! Be sure to come to the dinner on the 27th to see what they look like fired!
