Presidents Day still means ‘garbage day’

It’s Presidents Day which means schools, some liquor stores (the Ballard store as well as these others .pdf are open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.), post offices and government offices are closed. Most banks are also taking the holiday and parking on city streets is free. But, garbage collection is normal and transfer stations are open. Metro is also running on their “When no UW” schedule.

  1. There are also two rallies at our state capitol.
One pro tax increase rally, 12 noon
One anti tax increase rally, 10 am.
    Pick your poison.

  2. Absolutely. But watch for the union labor requirement for private liquor sales. More picking and choosing who gets the business, instead of an open bid process, from which real innovation and savings can be realized. Of course, I know most of you don't care about that.

  3. RE: getting out of the liquor store business to reduce spending/deficit… the state has to be the only people in the world who can't make a profit selling liquor. the liquor stores should be a gold mine.

  4. The reasons are numerous.
Leasing retail spaces, with no requirement to invest or competitive bid.
Union contracted state labor requirements, instead of market sensitive wages and benefits, driven by competition, not a monopolized system.
Way too many layers of staffing, through instore sales, distribution and enforcement.
Enforement would still be in place, bloated I'd bet, but you have to have it…
