Loyal Heights camps now at Ballard Comm. Ctr.

This summer the Loyal Heights Elementary camps that were scheduled for the Loyal Heights Community Center will be held at the Ballard Community Center (6020 28th Ave NW.)

Darcy emailed, “Imagine my surprise this morning when I tried to drop off my son and found only a dark, locked building and a handful of other confused parents.”

Robert Wilkens, the Recreation Coordinator at the Ballard Community Center, tells us that because of budget issues the camps had to move. “It’s a budgetary thing,” he says, “It [the summer camp program] was going to lose money” because not enough students had signed up for the Loyal Heights camps. He says that parents with students enrolled last week were notified of the change and will follow-up on why other parents haven’t been contacted.

Wilkens says that the dates, times, fees and camps are all the same and children’s files have been transferred. The only change is the location. Parents need to take their kids to the Ballard Community Center (6020 28th Ave NW), not the Loyal Heights Community Center.

  1. After the assurances that major changes were going to be avoided in the mid-year budget cuts this is how it is handled?
Let this be a wake up call to Ballardites who hope to keep both community centers open in the 2011/2012 budget. The most recent solution lasted all of 1 month.

  2. This may have more to do with low enrollment numbers at Loyal Heights, rather than budget cuts. That’s what I’ve heard at least.

  3. Ballardy is correct and I’ve updated the post. Not enough students were signed up for it to make financial sense to run the program at Loyal Heights.
