Ballard schools receive money for energy efficiency

Three Ballard-area schools will get a cut of nearly $3.8 million in grants from the Washington State Department of Commerce. The grants to the Seattle Public Schools were announced on Wednesday by Governor Gregoire to fund energy-efficiency projects at 21 Seattle schools.

Ballard High School will receive $749,000 to retrofit lighting and replace the HVAC system and controls. Viewlands Elementary School, which will reopen in 2011, will receive $513,300 for the same project. Whitman Middle School will receive $45,530 to retrofit lighting in the gymnasium.

  1. The Ballard High building is only eleven years old! Why on earth do they need three-quarters of a million put into the HVAC and lighting?
