Hit and run suspect flips car on 15th Ave.

A white pickup truck smashed into the back of a car at 15th and Market just before 8 tonight, a witness says. A short time later, the truck flipped over on its side on 15th in front of Ballard High School. Police had him in handcuffs.

It all began a little after 8 p.m. as the truck headed northbound on 15th toward Market St. “A speeding truck came up, hit the center median and then rammed into the back of this other car, and sped off,” said Dylan, who witnessed the accident from the bus stop. He said sparks were flying off the truck as it straddled the center median before impact. “He got on the other side of Market, hit the median again, and sparks were flying off his rims. I saw him floor it all the way up. And a cop car was right behind him.”

That police car just happened to witness the accident, and tailed the suspect’s truck up 15th, where the vehicle flipped on its side at 65th St. We saw officers speaking to the driver, who was handcuffed and sitting at the bus stop.

Fortunately, it appears there were no major injuries in the accident. Our thanks to My Ballard tipster Silver, who just happened to hear the accident — the truck’s horn was stuck as it drove up 15th — and gave us a call. And to @bmvaughn, who saw the crash at 65th and tipped us on Twitter.

  1. “Welcome to LA”

Damn, it’s cold here in SoCal!

BTW, this has happened for years in the “new” and “old” Ballard.

Echo the forums.. Hope everyone was okay.

  2. I know everybody hates the cops right now, with the shooting of the homeless guy and the face-stomping caught on video, but I wish they would face-stomp this creep (before he was hauled away to face the “justice” system).

  3. This is how people like you and me will wind up getting “face stomped”. Justify it in the case of a clear cut “bad guy” and then you give free reign for beatings of all the bad guys, the suspects, and then occasionally the guys that the cops thought were “bad guys” but were the wrong guys, and then the people the cops just don’t like because of how they dress or how they look or because they didn’t show enough respect for the badge.
This is why you must have a zero tolerance policy with police misconduct. ZERO. Once a guy is cuffed that’s it. Yes, the whole watch your head while putting them in the car and all. If someone resists arrest of course the cop is going to have to get them to comply but there you have to be very careful that the cops know that going one inch over the minimum to get the cuffs on is going to be investigated. Smart departments enforce this themselves. Dumb, expensive litigation and a tougher time doing the job is the result when departments like ours let this happen.
Seattle is going to wind up paying out a lot of money for the “Mexican piss” stomping where the guy stomped had absolutely no connection to the crime, the Williams shooting, the kid kicked and punched in the store downtown with his hands up, the guy outside the Balmar, and probably a whole bunch more that we haven’t even heard about.

  4. I’m with SPG. What caused this? Speaking of which: is there any new information on that other crazy driver from a few months back? The incident in which the Rizo’s French Dip guy rescued the little girl?

  5. I’m very glad that you didn’t get hit, Ddrumhiller! That must have been really scary!

As far as the cause, the police were going to test the driver for DUI.

  6. I was a witness at the scene of the hit and run, and I’d like to say that in this case, the police were fantastic. Very helpful, kept us in the loop about where the suspect had ended up, and thanked all of the witnesses for sticking around to give statements. And, the man who was hit was okay, fyi!

  7. Fight thugs with thugs. Great value system for my kids to look up to. I’m sure that’s a great way to foster a polite society to feel safe in.

  9. I drove by the accident on the way home and saw a woman with a blonde pony-tail pinned underneath the truck. In the second image with the white truck on it’s side – you can see there is a body underneath the truck. Was that a pedestrian that the driver hit and have they identified her?

  10. Sadly – I think a pedestrian may have been hit and killed when the driver tipped the car over at the intersection of 15th ave and 65th street. I saw her under the truck. Does anyone know more about this or who she was?

  11. No one was pinned under the truck. It sounds like one of the witnesses above was there from start to finish, talking with police. And perhaps even more obviously, if someone really were pinned under the truck in the picture above, do you really think the cop at the bus stop would just be chatting up a witness? :)

  12. We were driving up 15th and saw the aftermath. Not good. Seems there was a lot of action in Ballard Wednesday night. Lot of cop cars out and about.

  13. It actually wasn’t drugs or alcohol that caused this accident. The person driving the truck was on the run from a group nomadic aliens who call themselves the “Darklings”. They feed on the human blood type AB+ and this fellow had been unfortunate enough to have run into them Wednesday night. Reportedly he was feeling rather woozy due to blood loss. Quite sad really.

  14. Whoa, that looks like a pretty bad car crash. Is it really true that there was a woman below that truck? The report says that there were no minor injuries, so I’m quite confused now.
