Thousands march through Ballard for breast cancer awareness

Just as sun peaked through the clouds Sunday morning, a sea of pink washed over Ballard as the 60-mile, Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure made its way through the neighborhood.

At a cheering station near the corner of 8th Ave. NW and Leary Way, Brenda Khaleel and Andrea Gleithweith waved pink inflatables and shouted encouragement to the hundreds that passed by. Khaleel and Gleithweith were representing 60-Mile Men, a cancer awareness group. 60-Mile Men create a calendar to raise funds every year, and Khaleel said Mr. January and Mr. February were participating in the walk this year. “If you’ve walked the walk, you know the third day is the hardest,” said Khaleel. “They need all the encouragement they can get.”

After making their way down Leary Way, the walkers turned down Ballard Ave and walked through the Ballard Farmer’s Market, some stopping to pick up fresh berries along the way.

The walk concludes at Memorial Stadium (401 5th Avenue North) at 5:30 p.m. To learn more about the 3-Day walk, visit the Susan G. Komen site.
