Starbucks moving into empty Lombardi’s space

Updated & reposted with new information: “We are very excited to be relocating our store in Ballard,” a Starbucks spokesperson tells us. The new location is expected to open in early June and the current store will remain open until the new location is complete.

Starbucks is working to reduce the environmental impact during renovation and achieve a LEED green building certification by incorporating reused and recycled elements, where possible. We’re told that the design will reflect the character of the neighborhood.

Earlier:A well-placed source, who wishes to remain anonymous, tells us that Starbucks is moving into the vacant space at the corner of 22nd Ave NW and NW Market.

Starbucks currently has a small store-front right next door to the much larger space that housed Lombardi’s for 23 years before it closed in September 2010. 5 Corners Market Bar & Kitchen was briefly in that space but has sat empty since April 2011.

Just across the street, Ballard Coffee Works is busy building out the old Tully’s shop and hopes to open this spring.

We have calls and emails into the media relations folks at Starbucks for more information on when they plan to open. No word on what will take over the current Starbucks location.
