Tough night for Beaver basketball

By Bucky Beaver

Ballard Girls
There is never an easy night in Kingco basketball. Probably the toughest league in the state. The Ballard and Garfield girls had a hard fought game Friday night. The contest was back and forth all night long. Ballard took an early lead going up 17 to 11 after one quarter. Garfield fought back to take a one point advantage 26 to 25 at the half. The Ballard girls came out strong in the third quarter winning it by 8 points. Garfield did not give up however. Their pressure defense finally wore down Ballard at the end as they held on to a 57 to 54 victory. Ballard was led in scoring by sophomores Cailey Beckett with 18 points, Beverly Verduin with 13 points, and Nancy MacGeorge with 10 points. Ballard’s next game is Wednesday night at home against Newport High School.

Ballard Boys
Coming off a road victory at #2 in the state Skyline, the boys schedule didn’t get any easier Friday night as they travelled to #6 Garfield. The boys game was also hotly contested in front of a big crowd at Garfield High School. Ballard jumped out to an early lead 21 to 12 after the first quarter with some hot shooting. Garfield whittled away at the lead throughout the remainder of the game taking a one point lead after three quarters. The game was back and forth in the fourth quarter, but the Beavers could not get back the lead, losing 60-53. Clutch free throw shooting at the end by Garfield and an off night at the line by the Beavers was the difference. Ballard was led by 26 points and 10 rebounds from junior Seth Berger, 10 points by Junior Stuart MacGeorge, and 9 points and 11 rebounds by junior Johnny Verduin. Ballard’s crazy two week schedule continues next game on the road on Tuesday at Newport High School followed by a home game against #8 Roosevelt.
