Sailboat racing: Ballard Cup yesterday and Duck Dodge tonight!

Yesterday, the Sloop Tavern Yacht Club (STYC) held the first race of its third Ballard Cup Series. Of the class winners, the sailboat “Breeze” led by skipper Joe Bozick took 1st place for class 1.

Sixty-three boats were registered, in comparison to the 62 of the first series and 69 of the second series which ended July 9th. Watch a video here taken by one of the competitors from Shilshole Marina!

The competition is free to voting STYC members, while STYC Associate members pay an entry fee of $15 per 5-race series, and all others pay $25 per 5-race series.

The second round of this third series will take place Monday, July 27th.

This Tuesday night brings yet another Seattle Duck Dodge race in good tradition! The theme of this sailboat race is Gilligan’s Island Night, but it changes each week. (View the schedule here.)

Begun in 1974, Duck Dodge (originally subtitled: Lake Union Beer Can Regatta) is celebrating its 41st year of coordinating Seattle sailboats in a race around buoys on Lake Union. Duck Dodge is entirely volunteer run and hosts over 50 boats a race.

The startimes vary for classes by 5-minute increments; the fast boats lead the race right at 7:00 p.m. Join the Lake Union excitement by spectating or being part of the action. Visit the Duck Dodge Facebook group, or ask a sailor.
