Large lock empty for annual maintenance

The view at Ballard Locks is an interesting one this month as the Large Lock is completely drained for the crew to perform scheduled maintenance.

The large lock at the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks is closed to all marine traffic until 8 p.m., on Wednesday, November 23, for annual maintenance. The chamber is currently drained of all water and is quite a sight to see.

The small lock will still be available for vessels less than 120 feet in length and 26 feet in width throughout the large lock maintenance period. Mariners may experience delays, depending on passage demand.

Ballard resident Annie took the fantastic photo included above of crew members working inside the empty lock chamber.
