Local businesses host toy drive for Seattle Children’s

Two local businesses are organizing a toy drive to donate to Seattle Children’s Hospital.

Conor Byrne Pub and Rad Power Bikes are asking for toy donations now through Dec. 19 — the toys will be delivered on Dec. 20. They’re also running a fundraiser, which by Wednesday morning had raised half of its $2000 goal.

Diarmuid Cullen from Conor Byrne started the toy drive and fundraiser after his daughter was hospitalized a few years ago. From Cullen:

A few years back my daughter spent some unexpected time in the hospital. During this scary time, she was soothed and consoled with blankets and toys that were donated to the hospital. Stressed with the health of my child, the small gesture of a blanket or small toy brought a sense of normalcy and relief, and a whole dose of comfort in an uncomfortable situation.

Since then, I have hosted this Fundraiser and Toy Drive to benefit the kids at Seattle Children’s Hospital. It is my small way of giving back to the community that helped us, and more importantly, hopefully bring a little comfort to the kids and parents that have to spend time in hospital.

Seattle Children’s has a wish list for toys, which they emphasize must be new for infection control and allergies. Some of the most-needed toys include crayons, infant rattles, toy cars, DVDs, and Uno cards.

Toys can be dropped before Dec. 20 at either Conor Byrne (5140 Ballard Ave NW) or Rad Power Bikes (2622 NW Market Street). Rad is offering 10 percent off their accessories for anyone who drops off toys.
